San Antonio ADN Q's

Published

Hello!

I am an ADN-RN Student in Michigan and my husband and plan on relocating down south when I graduate and pass my boards next summer (2010.) We have looked at Tennessee and Texas and are leaning towards the San Antonio area. I am curious about a few things and was hoping someone would give me some advice.

**I want to work in a hospital. Will I be limited or held back by my ADN, as opposed to a BSN? I plan to go on and eventually obtain my Masters, but for now I just want to work as an RN for awhile and pay off some debt and have babies! :)

**What is the job market like for Nurses in TX? Is it very competitive?

**What do RNs make (on Average) in San Antonio?

Any advice would be very helpful! Thank you! BTW....it is 7 degrees right now where I am....wonder why I want to move to TX?!!

Well Im staying off of Perrin Beitel? I think northeast baptist is about 5 minutes away? Southwest general is offering me a position as well as metropolitian hospital. I am most interested in metro methodist because they have openings in there ICU and Critical Care units for new grads and thats where I would like to go. I dont know much about the benefits each offers as of yet so...... I turn to the forums to get a generalization of the norm? 78217 is the zip where I am currently located? I have looked at homes located in 78253, 78245, and 78233 areas?

I would generally stay away from anywhere northeast of 281, except for Alamo Heights. West of 281, outside 410 has less crime.

I like San Antonio, people are nice. You can scout the medical center area, Methodist, VA, Baptist, Cristus Sta Rosa plus a number of longterm care facility, dialysis center etc. Plenty of Apartments too. Yes, you can stay at extended stay hotel within the medical center zip code.

I beg to differ on the Steakhouse issue -- Clearly Little Rhein (on the riverwalk) has the absolute best hunks of beef ANYWHERE in the Western hemisphere... and there's always the Red Barn just off I-37 south (can't remember the exact street). SA is a foodie's mecca!!

Bill Millers Barbeque is not all that great either!

Tom's Ribs was one of my favorite BBQ places in SA, but unfortunately, they closed all 3 of them recently and went out of business. :(

Yes, Tom's Ribs was good, and too bad they're closed. The County Line has good bar-b-que (off I-10 W near Wurzbach).

Wonder what happened to chocolateskye? Where are you working now? Have you decided what area you want to live? I currently live on the Southwest side of San Antonio, off Loop 1604 and Pue Rd. There is a lot of growth out that way too. New homes are going up like crazy, but the downside is it's not that close to the Medical Center or the other hospitals on the Northeast side. But there is also another new hospital being built out on the SW side...Christus Santa Rosa off of Hwy. 151 and Westover Hills, but I'm not sure when it'll be finished. It looks like it's almost done.

I'm not a nurse...not even a nursing student yet...just applied for the fall semester at BSHP (ASN program) and plan to take the NET next month and I'm very excited!! :)

Hey sorry I havent written on here in a while but....... well, I found a job at southwest General. I also found a nice rental home near Sea World. Lets just say that I am actively looking for employment at the moment. I am however willing to give the hospital a try before I run screaming! Getting to know the area and trying my best to look at the brighter side of things.

You picked a great area to live. I lived in San Antonio before moving up to the Austin area but once I graduate from bridging I plan on moving back ASAP!!!! I also want to live near Seaworld, outside of the 1604 loop and am interested in the new hospitals being built out there. I think Christus Santa Rosa and Baptist have brand new hospitals in that area. Either there or I may live near 281 and 1604 and apply at the new Methodist hospital there. I can't wait to get back!

Have you started SWG yet? If so how do you like it?

Im confused. Im a coder and I work from home. I have an associates in Health Info Tech. I decided to apply to the RN program at Baptist here in San Antonio, however, after reading these posts, I may have made a mistake. As a coder I make much more than the starting rates offered here. Im hoping that the rates have changes. Is this really what an ADN makes here?:uhoh3:

It's the starting salary for an RN.
