Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2012

Hi everyone! :nurse:

So, the applications are due today (September 1st) for summer admission to ABSN program at Samuel Merritt. How does everyone feel about their application?? :up: :down: What campus did you apply to?

According to acceptance letter we will receive more information after our letter of intent is processed. Then the site says as long as we filled out fasfa then we should receive our financial aid package in about 2 weeks. Then from that I guess we will know how much to borrow in addition. SMU site seems to have a great private loan area if you follow the links but I think we need our financial aid packet before taking that step.

Anyone please let me know if this doesn't sound right or you have any additional information.

Also, if anyone finds out any dates or more information please post!

I persally took my letter of intent (yesterday) and they had me talk to a financial aid counselor right away... The only thing we can do is to get the FAFSA submitted, for everything else we will need the financial aid packet. Still I woul give them a call and make sure they have your stuff going on in their system. My counselor had to change some things around cause I was signed up for Oakland and accept for San Francisco.... Anyways... She also said that the packet should be coming in about a week and if not to call her back. Also I already receive my student username and all that for the online stuff and already signed up for all 10 classes.Hope this help :-)Congrats for all those who got in and Jason B let us know what's up cause u had great scores.I would like to meet people and talk about all this stuff we have to do before class starts but can't send PM's :-(

I straight up did not get in at all. I didn't even get a waitlist spot. What's weird about this is that my stats are great! 3.9+, 94% TEAS, volunteer work, etc. Maybe it was my essays that weren't powerful enough? I don't know. I'm gonna send an email to the counselor I've been in contact with and ask exactly what I may have been able to do differently.

It's devastating news for me! With complete confidence that I was gonna get into SMU, I didn't send out any apps to other schools. I'm gonna cool off today, do a bunch of research over the weekend on other 12 month ABSN programs around the country, and then start making moves on Monday to complete those apps. I'm willing to go anywhere in the country that has a 12 month ABSN program. So...we'll see...

I feel you Jason. I have a Masters in Chemistry form Carnegie Mellon, partial work on a PhD at Cal, five years experience at a doctor's office, 95% or so on TEAS and a 3.9 GPA and I only got in off the waitlist to the SF cohort, my second choice. Still hoping to get into Oakland. Also, I'm male. It's ROUGH this year, I guess.

You'll get in somewhere man. Brush the dirt off your shoulder's bro. Sac State has an ABSN program less expensive in tuition and cost of living.

#Financial Aid

The SMU Financial Aid Office works directly with lenders. They have the final say on how much we can borrow. The ABSN program is divided in 3 terms Summer, Fall and Spring. SMU will only approve a maximum of $30,000 per term that includes Federal and private loans. Federal Loans only allow you to borrow $6,250 per term, if approved. So the maximum amount you can borrow from private loans is $23,750 per term, if you accept the Federal Loan.

The SMU Financial Aid Rep I spoke with said that they would not disperse a student loan that would cover the entire tuition, supplies and cost of living in one lump sum. However, the Rep said that they would process a loan that would pay tuition for the remaining Fall '12 and Spring '13 terms. But, my guess is that they would disperse the remaining amount for supplies and cost of living a few weeks prior to the start of each term.

My plan is to get financing for each term as I conquer them. I am getting my loans through Sallie Mae. They have the lowest APR @ $23,750 incraments. The earliest they allow you to apply for a loan is three months prior to the start of the term. Although, you can request for more than my amount it's up to SMU to decide whether to process it.

Jason... I am so so sorry. Have you checked out your letters of rec, if you got an extra copy? I don't know how you didn't get in. Given your scores, that is crazy. Like Ashton Kutcher is gonna knock on your door and tell you that you just got punkd because that is absolutely ridic. Can't imagine what criteria prevented you from getting in. It had to either be your essays or letters of rec. Everything else is STELLAR!!!

Dominican also has an ABSN program but I think they require a few other classes, possibly Ochem. And some other things like Health Statistics. Again, I am so bummed on your behalf. Maybe you will get into somewhere else that is less expensive. Even if you do a 2 year BSN, you might be better of so there are more jobs when you graduate.

Let me know if you have any questions about the essays. I was totally unsure of what to write as well. Hard to write about yourself.

Sika - are you another cohort besides san mateo june? If you are san mateo june, how did you get your username so quickly and who do we call. I have only received 2 emails so far...second for background check and pre-health.

Early Questions...wondering if anyone knows yet for san mateo June cohort??

When is orientation...during registration?

Is there any other meeting dates we need to attend before June 4th (start of class) besides registration 4/23 - 4/27?

Is registration online or at San Mateo campus or in Oakland?

Registration is online but you need to wait to get your username and password from the school it took about 3-4 days after I paid my tuition deposit to get my logon.

I am in the SF/San Mateo April cohort and we are having an optional open house and a mandatory 2 day orientation so I'm sure you will have the same meetings but different dates and probably different locations as well.
