Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2012

Published

Hi everyone! :nurse:

So, the applications are due today (September 1st) for summer admission to ABSN program at Samuel Merritt. How does everyone feel about their application??  What campus did you apply to?

I was expecting the financial aid package to be more useful that it actually was to me =\.. Maybe it's just me though.

I tried to create a group for the SF/San Mateo cohort but I need to add friends! Can someone who's also in that cohort pm me your FB so I can add you and get our group started =)

Thanks for everyone's updates on where you are in the process and listing your cohort. Even though I am june cohort it helps to see where they are in the process and what your experience is.

Thanks

what do you mean more useful?

I was told that all info regarding financial aid can be found on the SMU website.

Just got my email, I yelled aloud at work! I got in for June at San Mateo!!!

I don't have 15 messages yet so I can't PM. But once I can I will send you my e-mail

I need to do the same!!

SF April cohort-Is anyone going to the student welcome open house tomorrow? I won't be able to make it but will def go to the mandatory orientations.

@Gandi: I am going to the open house today I will let you know how it goes

I received my packet for Oakland yesterday but I live in Oakland so you Oaklanders should receive them tomorrow I would think. Federal financial aid isn't much compared to the total cost, but it is better than nothing. Also, the unsubsidized federal loan has a pretty high interest rate (almost 7%) across the board. I am thinking of just taking out a personal loan for that amount and only taking the subsidized portion ($2,500 x 3 semesters). Plus the unsubsidized starts accruing interest the second it is dispersed. So I think that it makes more sense to get that portion in the form of a personal loan. It all comes down to your interest rate. So do the math and figure out what is best, I might not be taking the unsubsidized portion.

Honestly, my head was spinning after my FA meeting. It is looking like each sememster runs approximately $21,000 tuition+ $850 labs+ $330 x 4 mos- making up the first sememster for Mandatory health insurance (unless you have super-super coverage including med, dental, vision) + books $650ish is the total. Don't quote me on that though, I don't have the paper in front of me. All that plus living expenses. Then multiply that times 3 for 3 semesters. YIKES!!!

One more thing- the FA person told me that you probably dont want to take out the loans ahead of time- just each semester as you need it. This is because your interest will start to accrue upon dispersal. I know it is tempting to jsut borrow all you need now because it will all be figured out but we definitely dont want to pay any extra interest than we have to. Maybe some of you already thought of this but I have NEVER taken out loans like this so it is all new to me.

I love that we are all helping each other out so much. Feels like we are in this together!

so it looks like tuition went up another 2.5K for this year to 63K...the other program I am likely to go for is $67.5K for just tuition, but i hear they offer at least $10K in transfer scholarship and have male and minority grants as well...so we'll see...another note for those at the top of the oakland waitlist...I have not officially withdrawn my name yet...as the acceptance to Linfield College was an unofficial email...i should be getting the letter in the next couple days...
