Samuel Merritt ABSN Spring 2022

Published

Hi everyone!

I wanted to start a thread for students who are applying for Samuel Merritt's ABSN program for the Spring 2022 cohort since it's due on July 1st. Feel free to ask questions and/or post your admission stats if you'd like. I went to a couple info sessions, so maybe I can answer some of your questions. To anyone who is currently in the ABSN program or have completed it, I would love to hear your experience and thoughts about it since I have heard mixed reviews.

Here are my current stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.90 (Though I am still completing some pre-reqs this Summer/fall)

Science GPA: 4.00 (Taking pathophysiology this fall)

TEAS: I took it twice and luckily SMU will take the best scores from each individual section between the two. However, I don't know how they would calculate that since TEAS scores are equated based on difficulty. If I were to calculate my score based on my best results it would be 89%

Letters of recommendations: One from a Human A&P professor I had, who I also TA'd for after completing the class, one from a nurse, and an optional one from my boss at my current job (part-time food service employee).

Volunteer experience at an Emergency Department, TA'd for a Human A&P class for Sac State's ATS program (I don't know how relevant this would be since it wasn't a college course. ATS classes are meant for middle school/high school students who wish to enrich their knowledge in subjects of their choice).

Good luck on your applications everyone! You got this!

@LovingNursing

@LovingNursing So sorry to hear this round didn't work for you. It seems like the reapply technique helps chances.

I thought you applied for San Mateo as your first choice! Did the notification say anything about Sacramento vs San Mateo? Maybe there's still a chance for San Mateo since it's mostly Sac folks who are receiving letters?

Good luck with all of it!

And congrats to Sac folks ?

I got in as well! WOOOHOOOO. Congratulations to everyone who got in and to those who didn't this time around DO NOT GIVE UP. I applied to USF, UCSF and UCD last cycle and was waitlisted for all of them. I retook physio, chem and stats and finally made it. It is a journey.

My stats:

Global Disease Biology B.S. from UCD

Undergrad GPA: 3.2

TEAS: 89.3 Overall (87.2 Reading, 96.9 Math, 89.4 Science and 83.3 English)

Got a C in stats, chem and physio but retook for an A. All other prereqs are As except for a B in anatomy. I have experience working as a substitute teacher, spent time abroad working for a clinic, 2 years as a research assistant for Sutter, tons of random volunteer hours with Meals on Wheels, COVID testing sites, hospitals etc.  Letters of rec from my practicum mentor, the chief medical executive at a hospital and by boss from my college job.

Thank you for the encouragement! If you don't mind sharing your stats I would love to know so I can gauge the type of students they have been accepting.

Yes I did apply for the San Mateo location but I received a general rejection email ?

I am still keeping my head up as I finished a lot of in progress classes and added experience for the September 1st deadline.

I actually really surprised at how fast they sent out decisions this year, I read in the past that they usually came out in October. Hopefully they make decisions fast for next round. I hate the wait so much. For everyone who didn't make it, we got this stay strong and motivated our time will come!!

@LovingNursing Great attitude! I heard from a former academic counselor this morning that, "the difference between people who make it as nurses and the ones that don't is that the ones who make it reapplied!" Best of luck!

*Of course excluding those who got in the first time!
