To all perspective SMC ABSN San Mateo Summer 09 students:
As the Nov 01 application deadline approaches, we should be at least finishing up with our application; some of us may have already mailed it out. Congratulations on taking an important step toward a successful nursing career!
I'm going to mail out my application this week. Currently taking English 1B and patho, I'll take speech and sociology next quarter. Life is not as hectic as when I was taking A&P and chem classes; attending both lecture and lab is so time-consuming. Now I can go zumba-ing 3-4 times a week at Clubone in San Jose. Life as a pre-nursing student is still good, even though I'm not contributing to my 401k.
Please use this thread to get to know each other, to prepare ourselves for the rigorous ABSN program, and to help each other succeed. Why? Because it's in giving that we're receiving!
Re: PharmacologyI'm with dmskoka - pretty overwhelmed by pharmacology. I'm restudying everything, but find it hard to know which drugs we should know. My online pharmacology class at Barstow left a lot to be desired and I don't know the best way to get organized around this subject.
Question for Hatingthewaiting: do you continue learning pharmacology throughout the ABSN program? Do you have any recommendations for studying this immense topic?
Thanks!
I actually ended up taking pharm simultaneously with my first classes because I started early and they wanted to fill the class. Since I took it right before going into the hospital, a lot of it stuck pretty well. I wouldn't get too worried about memorizing every med in the book though. Your clinical instructor will make you look up every med before giving it until they feel confident you know its use, side effects, etc. Repetition and use in practice is what really cemented it in my brain.
PS: I'd say at least knowing the categories is pretty important, like beta blockers: what is does, why it's prescribed, etc
Just revisited the BRN site showing the NCLEX passrates: http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/passrates.shtml.
A bit surprised that SJSU's drops to 75.6%. De Anza also has a lower rate. Glad to see SMC's still flies above 90%, which doesn't serve as an arguement for a much much higher tuition though.
I think when it really comes down to it, you get out what you put into nursing school. If you study hard, make the most of your clinical experiences, ask lots of questions, and review a lot of NCLEX questions, then you will pass the NCLEX. I think maybe those who apply to the programs like ABSN at Samuel Merritt are already programed to be good students that's why we have such a high pass rate. I have no doubt everyone in my cohort will pass the NCLEX and would no matter where they went. Also, by the nature of the program, requiring a previous degree, we tend to be older and therefore more mature. Just my
Congrats to your friend, Iwant2beRN!! Do you know which campus she got accepted into? I read in the other Samuel Merritt forum that several acceptance letters for the San Francisco campus have been received. My first choice was San Mateo so I'm still anxiously waiting for a response! Good luck to you all! :)
I applied to the June 2009 ABSN program and am dying to know if I have been accepted into the program. Does anyone know how many students will be accepted? I also am nervous that someone who applied to San Mateo as their 2nd choice will beat me in even though it is my 1st choice. How does this work? Do I have priority since it was my 1st choice? or is it purely based on academics, etc? I just am soooo nervous that I will receive a letter of denial. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

I am excited to get my acceptance letter, but also just trying to enjoy the calm before the storm...the ABSN will be a lot of work, but well worth it. I have also started studying for the NCLEX. We won't have much time to do this while in the program, and it may actually help us in the program. I wish all of you the best, and cannot wait to find out where we end up. I believe that everything happens for a good reason, and if I/you don't get accepted it is because a better opportunity is waiting for us.
