To all perspective SMC ABSN San Mateo Summer 09 students:
As the Nov 01 application deadline approaches, we should be at least finishing up with our application; some of us may have already mailed it out. Congratulations on taking an important step toward a successful nursing career!
I'm going to mail out my application this week. Currently taking English 1B and patho, I'll take speech and sociology next quarter. Life is not as hectic as when I was taking A&P and chem classes; attending both lecture and lab is so time-consuming. Now I can go zumba-ing 3-4 times a week at Clubone in San Jose. Life as a pre-nursing student is still good, even though I'm not contributing to my 401k.
Please use this thread to get to know each other, to prepare ourselves for the rigorous ABSN program, and to help each other succeed. Why? Because it's in giving that we're receiving!
... sharing your scores for the NET. It would kind of give me an idea of what scores they are accepting.
I've heard that a composite score of 85 and above is good (enough).
What is your schedule like?

Hi everyone!
I also applied for the San Mateo location for June 2009 and my check was finally cashed a few days ago but still no word from them by email- arrg! I have a few questions so if anyone has any experience/thoughts it'd be much appreciated:
- Has anyone else been a little freaked out by some of the threads here about how SM is totally disorganized and not worth the money (hatingthewaiting, I'd love some insight as to how true this is)? This is really giving me second thoughts. I applied to SM b/c my mom who is a nurse has told me SM graduates seem to be better prepared than most BUT she hasn't actually done patient care for a long time and it seems most people think SM has gone downhill in the past several years. This is a huge comittment money-wise and I don't want to be disappointed AND in debt.
- I'm trying to get the ball rolling with financial aid even though I have no idea whether I'll be accepted or not. It seems like you need to already be accepted into a program for most scholarships and loan-givers to consider you. Many scholarship deadlines aren't until later in the year which means we may not receive the money until the last half of the program - this is very different from what I experienced during my first undergrad experience. How the heck does this work?
Thanks for the help and I hope I'll be meeting you all in person in June!
Hi everyone! I applied for ABSN and am waiting to hear back. I spoke to Laura and she gave me the breakdown of applicants for the different campuses.
Oakland: 107
San Mateo: 55
San Francisco: 48
She commented that there were not as many applicants this year as in the past, so hopefully we will all get in!
Good Luck to everyone!:wshgrt: and happy holidays!
Wow! That number is actually great news for the san mateo location. I work at the Kaiser in Santa Clara and live in San Jose so hopefully I get accepted there! From what I hear about Samuel Merritt nursing students doing their clinicals at our hospital, the staff nurses seem to give high marks for students from sam merritt and sjsu. Although we've got nurses from Evergreen College as well. Not sure if I've seen any other schools have their clinicals at our place. Samuel Merritt has an excellent reputation at our place, and my mom (who also is an RN) said to apply because she's also heard positive things about the school.
Hi everyone, I just went to the info meeting at Oakland campus today. I know I should've gone to one a long time ago but missed the ones earlier this year.
So, anyhow, not much info that I didn't know before. Just found out that I am waitlisted for Spring but not much hope there since I'm at the bottom of the list. Lizzie said that last summer, everyone on the list got in and still 4 more seats left for San Mateo campus. Not this time around...
The good news is I'm in for the summer:D! ...I think.
And they are still doing the Kaiser scholarships, just a few per cohort. Regarding the job market, they said, "there are jobs out there, you just have to be patient and not picky. Most likely med/surg at night or weekend shifts for the first job." But they also said, they know some graduates that are still looking for jobs. I don't know for how long.
So, there aren't much news from the info meeting. But I'll share this.
ABSN 2007 Summer Data for 3 campuses(Oak, Sac, SM)
Applicants 250
Accepted 175
Deposited 119
GPA(last 60) 3.383
GPA(Science) 3.398
Average NET 78.11(Reading) 91.64(Math) 85.1(Composite)
I think we have all the reasons to be optimistic!

I thought you applied for Summer 09. Are you done with all your pre-req's? I still have 2 easy ones for the winter quarter. I wish I had taken them earlier so that I could start nursing school Spring 09. Too late now. Thanks for your good info. Happy Holidays!
Yukitiki, How do you know you are on the bottom of the list? Since we don't find out anything until end of February?
I'm also wondering what you mean by "last summer, everyone on the list got in and still 4 more seats left for San Mateo campus. Not this time around..." Do you mean they are not letting anyone else into San Mateo this year? How do they know that everyone will accept their offer? One more question: what campus are you accepted into for summer? How do you know? Did you apply for spring and they automatically rolled you over to summer?
Just trying to get a grip on what to expect, since I'm kinda freaking out with not knowing!!!
thank you!

Yes, I will be done with all pre-req's this week! I didn't apply until late (beg. Oct) because I thought pre-req completion was required before you apply. But I found out that it is not the case and that they were still accepting application for Spring around Sept.(Supposedly the deadline is 7/1) Then, I had to register for the earliest NET and wait for the result. I should have just turned in the rest of application then...maybe it made a difference, maybe not.
I really hope I can start in January but don't think that'll happen.
Happy Holidays to you, too!

I'm waitlisted for Spring - January start.
Last summer, it seems they had very few applicants for SM campus, therefore everyone applied (qualified) got in and there were 4 more seats left. That's not the case for Spring 09.
I don't know for sure that I'm accepted for Summer but I am in their alternate list, so I can request it to be rolled over. It is not automatic. Unless 48 applicants are better qualified than me, I'm thinking I'll get in but I could be wrong.

Hello hatingthewaiting and rockypooh! Congratulations to both of you! I just got my results for the NET and was wondering, since the both of you were accepted into the program, if you wouldn't mind sharing your scores for the NET. It would kind of give me an idea of what scores they are accepting. Also, I am very aware that the program will be intense, and alot of hard work, but are you learning? What is your schedule like? What is your background experience if any, and yes, like rockypooh asked, since your're (hatingthewaiting) at the san mateo location, where are your clinical sites. I work at Kaiser Permanente and do see Sam Merritt students there at times. That would be great because if everything is close by, then I wouldn't worry too much about commuting or moving. THANKS!!!
