Samuel Merritt ABSN Fall 2019

Published

Hi everyone! Just wanted to get the conversation started for those who applied for the ABSN Fall 2019 cohort. I applied for the Sacramento location but would love to connect with all who applied in general! Good luck everyone!

This was for all of the pre recs. I would say though even more so with the science pre recs. Essentially they told me that if their is someone who has them all done vs not even if you may have a better application they will take the person who has theirs all done.

Brett, this info may be campus specific, because there were at least a few Sac ABSN candidates who were accepted for Spring of 2019 even though they had classes in progress. And some people who applied had all their classes finished and were passed by or put on the waitlist. It may have had something to do with the fact that their summer school grades were updated long before decisions were made, but they were definitely taken. And I had everything complete and was waitlisted. Personally, I try to not worry too much about this type of thing because it seems impossible to pinpoint what they’re looking for. But if that is what they told you for San Mateo, it’s still beneficial to have any and all information, so thank you so much for sharing your experience!

I agree.. I had a meeting with Ann Seed and all my classes were done except for Micro. She said that we can have 1 or 2 classes in progress as long as it’s taken during Spring semester that way grades/transcripts will be in on time.

Does anyone know if it's possible to defer admission to a subsequent cohort given a family or medical emergency?

Hello,

I did everything mentioned above and I still don’t see my calculated gpa. Is it because the verification credit and verification grade is blank. Even though they said they received my transcripts.

Howdy,

I don't know, but I'd assume it might have to do with your coursework verification status. Did you ever receive a notice that it was verified? I understand that the process can take some time, and is completed in chronological order based on when you application was received. I applied just over a week before the deadline, and received a notice of coursework verification the next day. It might be worth following up with NursingCAS.

Per NursingCAS:

"Verification can take up to four weeks during the busiest times of the year. Additionally, unforeseen circumstances can interfere, contributing to processing delays."

You may sign in to your NursingCAS application at any time to view the status of your application. If you have any questions, please contact NursingCAS Customer Service at (617) 612 2880 Monday through Friday, 9:00AM to 5:00PM Eastern Time, or email us at [email protected].

Hello,

They sent me a notification a while back, it mentioned that they received my transcripts and processed it. I received that notification on 1/17/19

Seems like a call to NursingCAS is in order. Hope you figure it given how nerve-wracking this process already is.

Hi everyone! First time applicant myself just waiting with my fingers and toes crossed for the acceptance notices. Reapplicants- do you know about how long it takes for them to notify everyone? I talked to the counselor and she said I had a competitive application but hearing that so many have been told that and are reapplying makes me more nervous!

Sure,

So Sciences GPA 3.34, overall 3.50, Required Prerequisites is like a 3.8.

HESI scores overall 93.6 with a 92 in A&P.

Have my Bachelors in Human Biology and Human Development.

LORs from two of my employers and my A&P professor

I've shadowed nurses at Sutter Memorial and Volunteered at Sutter Medical Center. Worked as a Behavior Technician and a Phlebotomist/Medical Examiner. Volunteer with the Red Cross and as an advisor for an organization at Sacramento State. The counselor said it was all good, but I suppose that doesn't mean anything until you are officially accepted.

River dancer,

I don’t have an exact answer for you. My guess is that if you ask outright, they’ll tell you no. If you wait until you’ve been accepted, you may have a little more wiggle room. I have heard of a past student who found out she was pregnant RIGHT after starting the ABSN program. She went through the program, had her baby, took a few days off (maybe a week) and they worked with her to keep her on track. But if you think you may need a deferment before you’ve even been accepted, and ask for one, I think they’ll tell you to apply again when you’re ready.

I remember asking if I would be able to switch a clinical day if it fell on an important religious event for our family and I was basically told “No, sorry. The schedule is the schedule and as a nurse, you should get used to it.” Yikes! But I think they say those things because they don’t want people who ask for lots of exceptions. They want the students who are willing to give up nearly everything for the program. But once you’re in... they may consider you more a part of the “SMU family” (so to speak) and help you out if they can.

I also remember them saying (WAY back, like 10 years ago) that if a student fell behind or had issues with one of the trimesters, they would work with you to keep you on track, but you’d have to commute to one of the Bay Area campuses to pick up your classes and stay on track. If you couldn’t commute or couldn’t stay on track once you’ve been transferred, you’re out and you’d have to try applying again.

That being said, it’s in their best interest to keep enrolled students to the end of the program to boost their retention rate. Currently it’s in the mid-90’s (if I remember correctly), and a student who has to leave the program would drop that number.

I hope this helps some? If it were me, I’d refrain from emailing and asking for exceptions before you’re accepted. You don’t want your name flagged as “difficult” before they get to know you a little. But that may just be me? I’m always overly cautious. Good luck to you and your family. I hope everything is ok.

Hope everyone is hangin' in there!

Hi All! Just found this page. Thanks for all of the info. I have applied to SMU Fall 2019 ABSN and this is my first time applying. I am not sure if reading all of this has made me feel better or even more nervous. Currently anxiously waiting for any email updates. I am happy to have found this page to connect to others and get somewhat of a timeline for what to expect!
