Samuel Merritt ABSN Fall 2019

Published

Hi everyone! Just wanted to get the conversation started for those who applied for the ABSN Fall 2019 cohort. I applied for the Sacramento location but would love to connect with all who applied in general! Good luck everyone!

Hey guys,

I received my preliminary review email today. I’m nervous but let the wait continue. I’m almost finish with my Micro class. Do I upload my grade to Nursing Cas, and have the school send my transcript to them as well or to Samuel Merritt?

The first time I had anatomy, interpersonal communication, and human development in progress.

Science GPA:3.0

Last 60: 3.3ish

Hesi: 92

I retook the HESI and now have 96%. I have a B in the 4 science prerequisites so right now I’m retaking micro and chem, hopefully will end with an A in both to boost that GPA. I’m pretty sure I will have to apply again because my science GPA is not competitive.

My BA is in psychology and anthropology.

Hey , you never know.. my friend got accepted with your gpa! Stay optimistic and don't give up

Hey, you can update your nursingcas when they send you a notification that you can. Also, send your updated transcripts to nursingcas

Well, 5 weeks later and I finally got the preliminary email! I hope it’s not that much longer to decision time!!

I'm gonna guess 3 more weeks lol. At least

Hello,

This is my third time applying as well. I have been waitlisted twice already and hoping this is my final application! They take awhile to let you know. All the other times I did not find out I was waitlisted until 6 weeks before the program was supposed to start. However they do seem to let you know before the next application is due so I would assume with the July 1 next application date that we will hear by the end of May. Hopefully before then though! Seems like we all are in the same boat. Here are my stats if it helps anyone

science gpa- 3.25

Undergrad in Kinesiology- 3.1

Last 60 units 3.5

Hesi- 91% overall 96 on A & P portion

I am a Emt as well as work in In home health care with a elderly man. I did not start this however until the beginning of the year so both of these are new to my application not the previous two I go waitlisted on.

I also volunteer and have been for three yeas with underserved teens in Oakland in a mentoring program as well as meals on wheels.

Every time I talk to the counselors that make me feel as though I will be getting in and there is nothing I can do to better myself. However I hear much differently from other people with inside information. They say they do not look at grades from other pre recs besides science but that is not true. If you did not do well in nutrition I suggest retaking it because they consider that part of the science scope.

Best of luck to everyone!! Hopefully we all get in!

Looking back at all the previous forums it would appear random on admission. I think they must weigh our essay answers and letter of recs pretty heavily. I see the "avg" scores for admission on their website, then people will far above getting denied and far below getting accepted. I guess thats reassuring but it makes everything feel much more random lol since we cant read what people's essays looked like or there LoRs that got accepted.

You look like a very strong applicant!

What # were you waitlisted the last 2 times?

I was 22/27 for the April San Mateo cohort and I was 62/70 for the Jan San Mateo Cohort. So not even close! My letters of rec are strong as everyone let me read them. I have one from my boss, one from a professor, and one from the VP of Sutter health. Im not sure about my essays but I talked a lot about how working in my previous job and through my mentoring program/ being from the Bay Area and seeing the health care disparity has really driven me to want to give back to my community.

Clearly though something in my application is off! lol

Has anybody actually calculated their GPA for the last 60 units? I did mine and it came out a tad differently from the Post-baccalaureate GPA that is calculated by NursingCAS. I'm curious if that is the overall GPA that SMU uses or if they recalculate it. Any idea?

Hi Riverdancer,

When I asked Kathryn last year, she said that they don’t really know the exact formula that NursingCAS uses to figure the GPA. She also said that the one NursingCAS gives them is the one they use. I had an issue where my “last 60 units” fell in the middle of a semester and I wanted to know how they decided which classes/grades to use for that calculation and neither SMU or NursingCAS could answer the question for me. It was frustrating. I wish I had a better answer for you as to how they calculate it, but I do know that what NursingCAS gives SMU is what they say they use for their admissions process.

Can you tell me where you found those calculations in your application? I have never been able to find what they calculated for my GPA.
