Salaries for LPN and Cost of Living

Published

Hi!

I'm new to the board. My question is what's the salary for a LPN in CT. I will be moving there next year. I'm currently livng in GA. And also how's the cost of living. Thanks!

I'm not sure of the pay for lpn's in the hospital setting, but in long-term you can plan on earning anywhere between 17-23 an hr with benefits. If you don't need the benefits, you can get per diem rate, which I believe is at 25/hr. Or is you choose to work with "pool" the pay is anywhere from 25-38 an hr. These are the pay scales for new haven area(info that I have gotten from friends who didn't mind sharing their pay. It may vary some, but I think that this is a pretty accurate account of what is being paid here.

Good luck on your move. I hope that you will love connecticut as much as I do.

Hi

I am a new grad (LPN) and I was offered a job yesterday starting $24/hr in a group home. I already work somewhere that offered me $22. The pay is good in CT for LPN/RN. Good luck!

According to the US dept of Labor, CT is the highest paying for LPN's. In the Hartford area new grads can expect to make at least $21/hr (days) But the cost of living is VERY high. They have a yearly car tax, and high housing costs. But it is a nice place to live. Hope this helps.

Hi, what exactly is POOL...?

Thanks

Pool; Nursing service agency....You have to drive to different Health Care Centers. (ie., Hospitals, LTC, Assisted living, basically where-ever needed.) Thats all I know.

Hi,

As a new LPN grad can you please answer a ? for me..I'm starting lpn school in sept & we start clincals 6 weeks into the program...what exactly will we be doing & will I be able to get a job during school w/ any of what they start you out doing in cliniacls ???

Hi--RxConnecticut, from what I hear, my sis went to NEtech, very little time is left for work outside of school, as the program is VERY intensive. Its basically everyday. Check with your program for the exact schedule. Usually class is all day and clinical is from seven am to one or two in the afternoon. Clinical sites vary from LTC and hospitals (in the last rotation). Good luck RxConnecticut!

Hi pokey,

Thanks for the info.I'm actually starting their night program it begins Sept.& runs 22-23 months...MWT 5PM to 10PM & 3hr online class per week...it's concidered full-time but somehow they shorten it a bit. I do know it's very condensed & "HARD".But, since it's a new program for the school they erally didn't have more info. for us yet...hopefully because it's 7 months longer than the day it possibly will be a little easier???? What do you start doing that soon in clinicals?? Also, do you have any salary info. It's hard to get the same answer from people..either they don't know or it's a very large payscale($10) difference for some.

thanks

Well RxConnecticut, I think in clinical you start with one patient. New England tech is big on paperwork and they have this packet of assessments that you do on your patient. I don't know if you start out giving meds. Almost all schools of nursing start their first clinical with basic patient care (CNA stuff). I guess if you really needed to work, I would suggest working the weekend alternative option as a student nurse tech or CNA which would allow for flexibility for work. Or since your program is in the evening (sweet! This is what I did in school), you may have time to work during the day, but I wouldn't advise that you get locked into something without knowing first how the program will be. You have to make the program the most important thing in your life if you want to be successful, as I understand that the instructors at NEtech, at least in New Britain, are pretty tough.

Anyway, you can expect to make between $18-29/hr depending on the facility and the hours. You tend to make more if you work Baylor. After a year you can work agency and make at least $30 an hour. The settings are mainly in LTC, but some hospitals in Ct will hire LPNs (like UCONN, and MMH)

Again, much luck to you in your endeavors:)
