I went to Capital. I had morning clinicals for my first semester, then evening clinicals thereafter. In order to get your dream in motion start with the prerequisites, as most colleges have a waiting list and you have to meet those prereq's even before you can even think about applying. Prereq's include ENGlish and Comp 101, intermediate algebra, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and basic chemistry. If you can't stop your day job, i think Goodwin college in east hartford has a night course with weekend coursework, and capital was supposed to start up a night program. You can do it. It is possible if you have the motivation and drive.I went the long way around so I would not suggest my route. I got a BS first then went to Capital after fininshing my prereqs (I only had A&P and micro to do) at a back up school (St.Vincent's in Bridgeport, just in case Capital put me on their wait list). I got in on the first try and I graduated. I've been a RN now for almost a year. It was a hard road but it was all worthwhile in the end.

I graduated with a BS in Human Devolpment from UCONN after first initially majoring in Nursing. I don't know how it is now but in 2000 the min GPA needed was a 2.5 with a C plus in General Chem and in A and P. I say apply and see what happens. You could always get your ADN and then go there for their Bsn to Msn program. They also have the Graduate entry into practice for people with a bachelor's degree already. Anyway, good luck! Pokey RN

St. Rapheal does hire LPN for the floors, not for the units though. If you are interested, definitely apply. I think it's a pretty good place to work!:)

While i don't work there, I just wanted to wish you good luck. Do you still live in NY? I was actually looking into Mt. Sinai the pay is awesome! Do you know anything about there?

As the popualtion ages, I believe that nurses, doctors, as well as mid level practioners will all be in demand as the population seeks affordable, accessible and safe health care. I know here in the US the nurses shortage is greater in some places than in other, but as projections show I do believe that doctors will also be in demand. At this time, I do believe that nurses are much more in demand than doctors. But I really don't think a doctor would become a nurse no matter how bad the shortage got. Just think if you went thru eight years of schooling and internship, would you give that up to be clean people up, even though you thought you could not find a job? There are always jobs for MD's..... Pokey

Thanks Brett! That totally clarifies it! CRNA do not practice medicine but nursing. I can recall someone here posting that they were asked in an admissions interview, if anesthesia was the practice of medicine or nursing. They didn't state what the answer was, and I always wondered since I thought CRNA were actually prescribing anesthesia. Thanks for the insight into that. You are really a wealth of info! Thanks, Pokey P.S. So all APRN's practice medicine right, except CRNA's and CNM's?

Stupid question, but---I thought ordering a med and prescribing a med were one in the same when done in facility. Not true?

CKelly, You can go to the FAQ's and read what's there, and for anything specific go to archives or search this forum for a topic idea. When I was researching info about CRNAs the following website was especially helpful. There's a web video even! Orgami----I posted the exact same thing about a month ago. I just started in the CTICU only I work straight nights. I was feeling the same way you are(still am only to a lesser degree). Let me tell you, hang in there. Try to put things into perspective. This is the only thing standing between you and CRNA school. Also, don't expect like a lot of us new grads do, to be an expert or catch on right off the bat. We are new, and we are learning. Try to hook up with some of the other new grads on your unit. It really helps to know they are feeling the same way. It's also a great way to get out some of your frustrations. My advice, hang in there. We are all going through it. Stay strong and try not to put so much stress and pressure on yourself. You CAN do this!! Good luck! Pokey
