Hey all!!:roll
I am currently living in Louisiana. I will graduate as an RN in May 2004 and would love to start my nursing career in Florida!! My main question is what kind of money do nurses make in Florida? I have been unable to get any sort of idea off the internet. What are pay ranges and starting wages for new RN's?? Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
I am currently a home care nurse in Connecticut but am moving to Orlando FL in March... Does anyone know approximately what the hourly rates for full time home care nurses is in Orlando? How about the per diem rates for new admissions, medical visits, pysch visits?
Also CT has medication administration visits that the state implemented to benefit psych pt's who are typically non-compliant with meds and would probably end up homeless....does FL have a similar program???? If so what are those rates???
If anyone would like to post rates for other states or locales please do so....you never know when we have to move again!!
Also, what are the avg rates for full time or per diem nursing in Orlando's hospitals????
Thank you in advance for your help
WOW, you guys have really ruined my day...I was sure I had read an article in one of my wife's nursing magazines which listed Florida as one of the top three areas for RN pay, along with California and the Northeastern states. dean
Nice post Dean. Florida pays a little better than some of the other southern states like Mississippi and Alabama, but in no way is one of the leaders in the USA. It's a growth state and a steady supply of workers moving keep the salaries down in a lot of fields, nursing including. But the salaries in nursing has steadily risen over the years and you can't say that about other fields. In fact in ten years my salary has risen over 10.00/hr within the same facility.
What The Hell Now I Am Really Scared I Am Going To Move To Ft Lauderdale I Am An Lvn And Seeing How Much They Pay The Rn's Upsets Me. Is The Cost Of Living Cheap? I Hope So I Live In Huntington Beach , Ca And We Pay 1270 For A One Bedroom Apartment And Thats Hard Enough I Could Not Imagine Making Less Than What I Do Now. I MAKE 19.50 NOW
Here is a link to current RN job openings across the state of Florida. As you can see, many of them start at just over $24,000/year.That works out to around $12/hour to start. Which is why the average salary is still below $18/hour.
If interested, you can apply for RN positions from that site.
We need to stop accepting the crap is right . Better wages are needed in Florida NOW !! I"ll work the system til it is dry if I have to but I am not working for so little . I am coming from $64,000 as a LPN . You RN's should be ashamed to work for soooo little .:uhoh21: :angryfire

The problem is that Florida is the destination of many retirees of the rest of the Country. The vast majority of reimbursement is from social security, medicare and medicaid - which never pays enough to cover the actual expense of hospitalization for elder patients (many of whom have numerous comorbidities that jack up the expense of their hospitalization).
Thus Florida has a bulk of very expensive patients that reimburse the least.
And with "Jeb" running the state, and catering to for-profit interests, chances of pay rates going up are poor.
To boot, it is one of the most difficult and expensive to get licensed in, stay licensed in, and get CEUs, now that the state has mandated nurses to pay $35.00 to "maintain our education records" or the CEUs won't count (I get plenty of free ones with my OCN - that no longer count). And to add insult to injury, the newest organization to "examine the nursing shortage" in Florida included an internet survey with licensing as well as a bid for donations. Do you think any discussion of competitive pay rates or the new extra fees that they charge was on there - of course not!!!!!!!
I keep a license to travel and spend time with my Mother (we are native Floridians), but for making a real living, I work elsewhere.

THEN JEB HAS NOT A BAD JOB AND IT IS UP TO MANY REGISTERED VOTERS TO LET HIM KNOW NURSE NEED MORE $$$ AND THAT MEANS LET HIM HANG. I AM NOT ABOUT TO GET TO FLORIDA THEN DEAL WITH POOR WAGES . LET ME TELL YOU THOSE OLD PEOPLE WHO RETIRE TO FLORIDA HAVE ALOT OF MONEY AND THEY BETTER USE IT TO PAY FOR LTC AND HOSPITAL WAGES OR THEY WILL DIE SOONER THAT THEY WANT . NURSE'S ARE NOT MISSIONARY'S WE ARE NOT CHARITY CAUSES WE WANT TO GET PAID FOR FAIR WAGES . SO WISE UP FLORIDA AND JEB QUICK THE NORTH NURSE ARE COMING AND WE DON'T TAKE ANY SHIT !!!
I totally agree with all of the discussion about wages for nurses in Florida. I moved her 3yr ago because of my mother. Coming from Illinois to here was a major wage differance. I did know how I was going to do it. I had the large exspence of license transfer that is horrible. 200.00 later and 6mo of getting on the phone with "Jeb" I had my license. My license is good and active. After all of the red tape I felt like a criminal in the state of Florida. It is now 3yr later and makeing 15.27hr verses 22.00 hr in Illinois. I have been a LPN for 27yr and I am at new grad pay :angryfire I thought "Jeb" was suppose to be the big education govenor for Florida. I have put out so much money on CEUs and keeping up with further education required for Florida, and havent got an increase in salary. Oh, well. Thanks for letting me vent. First we get rid of Jeb at Gov, I am not in the business of supporting old folks I am in the $$$ business. I want a board of nursing that supports ^in wages for nurses not politics. I think I will work for the highest bidder and do travel nuring in PA . Southwest air has a great plan for $55.00one way open for a membership plan . I can make 32per hour in PA on weekends . ??? why would I take care of LTC for less . I am in nursing for $$ not charity . Maybe the Florida Goverment should rethink past politics as I said Northern folks know who won the war and the South did not !!!:rotfl:

First of all, I hope that when you are one of the "old folks", that the younger folks don't feel negatively against YOUR age bracket.
Secondly, this North vs. South stuff is (a) old and (b) only divides us instead of uniting us. Moving to the South from "up North" over 15 years ago, I was appalled to see how other Northerners coming down here criticized everything in Southern society, running the place down, complaining about everything, etc. To the Northerners who come down South and don't like it, I say this: Move back home!!! The majority of Northerners who do move down here do so because of jobs or nice weather (neither of which is in general abundance up North). I love the South - I think the people are lovely and hospitable, and the slower-paced lifestyle appeals to me. No wonder so many Southerners have low opinions of Northerners. I wouldn't like it if someone moved to where I was born and raised, and continually griped about it. (I would be wondering....."and so why are you still here?" )We are all Americans, folks! :)

PRN probably pays more because no benefits, yes?
Hard to support a family on PRN, though - no guarantee of hours.
Anyone out there have a feel for salaries in Gainesville?
Will have 3-1/2 + yrs. experience in NICU at that time -
Of course, when transferring in from a state that HAS state income tax, I guess you have to figure THAT in........:rotfl:
