Sacramento City College New Selection Criteria

Published

i guess i just need a hand of encouragement at this point.

are any previous applicants no longer qualifying to apply to the scc nursing program due to the program criteria change? this would be my 4th time applying, finally i felt like i was going to make a dent in the amount of years that i have to wait to get into the program and bam - i'm hit with the new selection criteria and i no longer make the cut.

no i'm not a 4.0 student (3.2), i work in the healthcare field, got an 87 on my teas (which i realize isn't great - but it's not horrible), and am a 4th time applicant yet i'm still 1.5 points from making it into the application pool.

i have yet to find anyone else in my situation, and i congratulate anyone who is still able to make it into the pool now. i was just wondering what those who can no longer make it into the pool plan on doing for the future, since arc will be switching to this format next semester as well.

i haven't had a chance to go to any of the nursing sessions (i work fulltime days) i do however have a meeting with the nursing counselor this afternoon to talk about options (since we are no longer allowed to repeat classes in the los rios district). i understand that this is an impacted study/program - it has been long before i started my prereqs in 2007, but now i feel that my options are severely limited and i want to get the opinion of those in the same boat. also, i can't leave state, it's not an option, i have a family, and i'm just kind of bummed about the whole thing.

Hello,

I just took the Teas for the first time at SCC and failed!! I couldn't believe the fact that i cannot apply to the program at SCC....nevertheless, i applied to ARC. Please don't feel discouraged. Keep hope alive and apply everywhere that you CAN apply. Also if your tired of wait-lists, there's always private colleges...and i myself am thinking about it very strongly. There is one called Unitek...it's one of the best private schools...costly but really high NCLEX rates. You automatically get into the RN once you do the LVN program. I have a seat in the bay area one for november...but offcourse i am still crossing my fingers for ARC.

Anyay don't be discouraged. The SCC criteria is definately going to hurt alot of people but will help SCC due to lower applicant rates. I am also pretty bummed but you have been applying for sometime...so i am sorry you have to go thru this. Goodluck with getting in somewhere!!

I am in the same boat. I passed the TEAS and have about a 3.3 GPA and still did not have enough points. I applied to ARC but did not get in there either. I work in the healthcare field as well. I've even applied to the LVN program at SCC and am still waiting to hear back from them. It is extremely frustrating because this would have been my 7th time applying! Hang in there. I'm not sure what my next step will be if I don't get into the LVN program.

For future82nurse - you should look into any of those other enrollment criteria that you could use to bring your points total up to the 67 points needed to apply at SCC. Using my own background, I would have scored >85 points. Not adding in all those extras, I would have scored >74. I have a Bachelor's, a 3.8/3.75 prereq/coreq GPA, and got 88% on the TEAS. Of course, I'm already in, I got in before the points system went "live." I did run the numbers at minimums and while you could meet the minimums, that won't generate enough points to get in. I think your options will be driven by how far you're off the 67 points minimum for being put into the eligible pool.

And I also applied 7 times to SCC before being selected. I believe I applied 8 times at ARC and was accepted there too. I chose SCC. It was VERY frustrating, but I kept re-applying. If you meet ARC's minimums, apply there too, and don't stop. It costs very little to re-apply to their program.

I've been reading this site for years! Years! Finally I am gonna post. I am in the same boat. I have applied 5 maybe 6 times for the RN program at both SCC and ARC and now can only apply to ARC and SCC (for the LVN). This will be my second time applying for LVN. I'm feeling really fortunate this time.

Wondering if akulahalk, hopeful 56 or future82nurse got in last semester or if we will be in the same application pool?

We are in the same application pool! I didn't get in last semester either. This is also my second time applying for the LVN program at SCC and about the third time applying at ARC. Best of luck to you! Get me posted.

This sucks lol I knew I shouldn't have moved out here from the bay lol Probably would have been the same though. I just wanted to ask what "pool" system are they using? What is that? It's like a lottery selection??

I think this is horrible! They are making it even harder for the people who really, really want to be nurses, to even get into a program! I maintained a 3.6 gpa while doing my pre-reqs and only got an 89 on the teas but soared through Nursing school and passed NCLEX on the first time. This goes to show it doesn't take a 4.0 and a super high TEAS score to make an excellent nurse! Don't get discouraged guys, when they start closing doors, crawl through the widow :)

I know its a little off topic, but I encourage you guys to apply at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, its a great program, not lottery, and take around 70 students each semester so your chance of getting in is high. Their admissions is based on grades for pre-reqs and TEAS score. If I remember correctly I only got 89 on the TEAS.

I got into Delta after being rejected twice at SCC and ARC, and I just took my NCLEX today =) So definitely check it out!

Grades and TEAS will help you alot for applying at Delta, however, they just cut their nursing program in half :sniff:

I think the “point system” for getting into the application pool at SCC is a bit strange. I thought I had a pretty strong academic record, yet I was still short of the minimum number of points before getting 5 extra points for working while taking my prerequisites. This brought me above the cut score by a mere 0.5 points!

This is my first time applying to SCC and my third time applying to ARC. I did not apply to ARC the previous 2 semesters since I had not yet taken the TEAS. I waited until the last minute to apply to ARC, so I decided to hand deliver my application & take a look at the campus rather than send in my application (UPS would have delivered it the next day). After dropping off the application, I drove to ARC and took a look at their campus as well. I must say that I came away with a much better impression of ARC than SCC.

Last year, ARC got back to me on 11/4/2011, so I expect to hear something within the next few days. If I don’t get in for spring, 2013, I’ll reapply for fall 2013/spring 2014 (SCC is moving to a single application period per year starting in February, 2013 for the 2013-2014 academic year). Meanwhile, I’m on the wait list at a few other colleges (almost 2 years and counting). I figure I will get accepted somewhere by spring, 2014 at the latest (knock on particle board) :).
