Hello,
My question is about the CPNE. I hear it is on a weekend. I religiously observe Saturday (starting Fri night, ending Sat night). One of the major perks of going to this school is that I never had to worry about having to take an exam on a Saturday or Friday night. Is it true that CPNE is ONLY ever a weekend? I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't have any form of accommodation. The closer and closer I get with each passing grade is the more I worry so I finally decided to post a question. So I guess what I'm asking is, has anyone else dealt with this out there and was there an accommodation made my EC?

I read somewhere on an EC document describing the CPNE that most testing is on weekends with some exceptions (did not specify though). I have only heard of students testing on weekends. I would contact your EC adviser.

I also read that some sites may do weekdays, but never heard of anyone actually doing it.
As for Sabbath observance, only you can decide if it is "OK" for you to break the Sabbath.
I had to make a decision as to if I would work on Sundays. I decided I would not purposefully schedule to work, and told the person who does the schedule I do not want to work Sundays. I am required to work 6 weekend days in a 6 week period, so I work every Saturday. In the past year, I have only had to work 5 Sundays (the person opposite me for 3 months also wanted to attend Church, and I could not in good conscience allow them to not be able to go while I did, so we split the Sundays).
As for the CPNE, it is a one time deal (hopefully ) and I felt that it was OK.
As said, contact your EC advisor.

While I respect religious observances .......what are you plans when you become a nurse and it is required to work weekends? Hospitals will not be so understanding. Accommodations are required only when they do not cause "undue hardship".
I wish you the best.

I'm guessing that the OP will be all over taking shifts on Sundays (and Saturday nights in the winter when the Sabbath ends early). At least that's what the observant Jewish coworkers I worked with used to do.
But OP...Esme is right. Hospitals are open 24/7/365. While hospitals can't discriminate against you due to your religion, they CAN refuse to hire you--or fire you--if you refuse to work on a weekend when a weekend commitment from employees is part of the terms of hire. Something to keep in mind for the future when you enter the workforce...perhaps a dispensation from your rabbi may help address that problem.
But worry about that later. Right now, finish becoming a nurse first.
Best of luck with your CPNE.

Luke 13: 14-17! This is what eased my heart when I was FORCED onto the time clock on Sundays. HOWEVER, being the hypocrite that I am, I try not to be getting off on Sunday mornings or going in on Sunday evenings. Thank God they count Friday evening as a weekend shift. Of course, my ultimate goal is to not work on any day that ends in Y.

The way I see it: you don't hear about Catholic hospitals closing every Sunday, or hospitals in Israel being closed on Saturdays. And I doubt that all of the nurses in those facilities working on days of worship are athetists/non-religious. There has to be some sort of religious dispensation from the rules that allow nurses to work on a day of worship if they are required to.

If I had to work more weekends so someone could have them off for religious reasons, I would be very unhappy.

I believe speaking with your advisor is the best course of action.
I too observe the Sabbath, as a nurse, with scheduling exemptions and accommodations from my employer. My boss went as far as giving a time and a half incentive to anyone working what would be my normally scheduled shift. I do not need to do any special tasks or working hours in return. As with everything in my life, when work became problematic, I for on my knees and prayed. God worked it all out for all involved.
Thank you all for your helpful comments. When the time comes, I will see if I can choose a weekday CPNE.
