S/S of molding in elderly? Anyone?

Published

I keep hearing the term "molding" when someone gets close to death and I don't know what exactly that means. I tried to look up some info online but I keep getting stuff about actual mold instead.

What is molding in the elderly? How can I spot it? Normally, I hear it when the feet get cold and turn a blue color. I know I probably should know but I have never heard the term before working in LTC :-/

Yep, I think you mean mottling too.

mot-tle (mobreve.giftprime.gifl)tr.v. mot-tled, mot-tling, mot-tles To mark with spots or blotches of different shades or colors.

When people begin to die, their body mottles . . . their legs, their arms, their trunk. It is lack of circulation as things shut down.

Molding - molding, which is when the skull bones shift and overlap, making the top of the infant's head look elongated, stretched out, or even pointed at birth.

the body is shutting down and circulation slows...blood starts pooling.. so the skin appears to purple/red/blue spots or splotches...

Nah, we'd just have had a good laugh over it and then you could have joined in with the others as they make fun of me while I dance about, mangling the oldies...

One boring day in the ER, one of the paramedics showed off all her funny ring tones and "Brick House" just cracked me up. She also had a ringtone that her paramedic daughter had sent, which was of an actual ambulance call.

My husband didn't get the song either . . .until I explained it to him.

What is weird is he knows the artist and year a song came out from the 60's and 70's . . . but never heard this song. Of course, he doesn't like Aretha or any Motown songs . . . I can't believe I married him. ;);););););)
