I am moving to NO VA next month and would like to apply to the nursing program at nvcc once I complete the pre-reqs. It says its a 2 year program but long does it usual take to complete?
Also, do you have to take math, bio and chem, or can you clep out on the entrance exam? Once you add in those three extra classes along with the other pre-req's, it seems like the program is neverending...lol TIA!
I should add that I am asking about math, chem and bio because I was homeschooled. I graduated, but don't have a transcript, so I had to get my G.E.D.!

Hello:
There's an online info session for the nursing program on the Nova website and admission checklists that should answer some of your questions. As far as I know they don't accept clep - you have to take the required courses but you should contact an adviser at the school - MEC campus - to get a definite answer about that. There are contact names and email addy's also on the website and they are good with timely responses.

as well do a search on here as there are more posts about the process.
It is now competitive to get in, This is a recent change. The traditional program is 4 semesters, start in Aug 2008, you would finish May 2010. They do have a few different options though. And yes one has tohave prereqs completed prior to acceptance, so in some ways it is a bit longer than 2 yrs. You can do many of them online. Some of them such as SDV 101 and medical terminoly is another can be completed very quickly if you do them online. Yep you have to have those science classes. I had none, since I was a slcker in high school and had to take them, and I belive thery have to have soem sort of lab content! But make a list and goto the MEC and see an advisor. I would not goto another campus as they may not know much, and most likely just send you to the MEC! Best of luck

I did CLEP for many of my prerequisites. The key is to spend a lot of time studying just as you would for a final in a class.
Thanks for the replies! I have will call the college on monday! Even though I have to take those extra classes I won't let it get me down! Taking them can only help me by refreshing my mind!

I think you will need to take bio, chem + the pre req.
Unless you have done it in your homescooling for bio and chem. I feel you for the lenght I think I will never be done either. I started this semester!!! Oh and for math you need to take the compass placment test as well for english I think. Good luck:nuke:
Well some good news!! I called the college and they said they would accept a transcript from the school I got my work from(I was homeschooled). So my mom checked for me and she said they can come up with a transcript. YAY! SO if I place good on the math placement test, I shouldn't have to take anything extra!

Well if you don't have to take anything my advise is to take all (or as many as you can) non-nursing classes before you get into the program (psy 201, 202, a humanities class like medical ethics, english 111, HLT 250 and hlt 141). These will probably increase your chances of getting into the program and will decrease your load once your in.
Would also study a bit before getting into the program. Some topics I would study are drug dosage calculations and med math. Roman numerals, army time, decimals, conversions. Also study a bit of nutrition and fluids and electrolytes.
I'm in my first semester of nursing at NVCC and we had a test on fluids and electrolytes and lab values, the class percentage was around 71% and its been said that its always the lowest percentage. So maybe studying a bit of that beforehand would be give you more of a headstart.
Good luck!
Yes, get those non nursing courses out of the way asap!! Some are extremely easy like SDV 101 and the med terminology course--take those online if u can , as you can go at ur own pace! One could complete the med terminology easily in a few weeks! I took the majority of my non-nursign classes online and liekd that for the most part could race on ahead!

I think this is great advice for those of us waiting to apply and eventually get into the program but people like me have no idea how to study information such as "fluid and electrolytes and lab values" when all we know is what we have learned in NAS 162. We don't have the same resources that you do, so do you have a website or book to reccommend? What do I google, etc?
I personally wouldn't sweat that until you start the program. They will instruct you on what you are suppose to know. Ensure you do the reading, do it a few times over and over! Many students during the 1st semester have not yet found the best way to study for nursing exams! I think our class avg for that exam was in the low 80's, or high 70's (Fall of 2007) I didn't think the exam was that bad.
