S & M Nurses

I'm not talking about, as Steve Martin quipped, "Spanish and Mexicans", but those who find pleasure in inflicting and receiving pain- sadists and masochists- S & Ms.

I'm attempting to get my head around the behavior of some nurses' recent behaviors. "S" refused to intervene in a patient whose status was in a state of decompensation and "M" responded favorably to being instructed like a dog, in one word commands.

There was a recent thread where a student nurse questioned the reason why an attending nurse refused to respond with comforting measures to an aphasic patient who was in obvious distress. I came up with a few reasons which were based in feelings such as power, apathy, and fear.

But what if S gets pleasure from seeing a patient in pain? What if S, seeing a patient in pain, like one of Pavlov's dogs response of action/reaction, gets a rush of endorphins as a result?

And on the other side of the spectrum, what if M does things that causes others to react negatively toward her? What if she too gets a rush of endorphins from conflict with others?

Just some questions for consideration; food for thought.

Speaking of food, I'm hungry!

Anybody got any M & Ms?

And here I thought this was going to be a thread about fashionistas, you know, the Stand and Model nurses. I ain't nearly freaky enough for this crowd.

No, but you'll get there.

You made me spew perfectly good wine. Now the cat's scared and I'm STILL laughing.

Back to S&M nurses: I think both feel powerless in their lives. The "S" category likes to feel a certain power over others. The "M" category is increasingly glorified in the current victim culture because she's a much more noble and worthwhile person than ALL the people who OPPRESS her. If you take her side against all her oppressors you are demonstrating your compassion to the world.

There is (or was) and Marks and Spencer at West Edmonton Mall. Once when in the area, I was given the assignment by a Liverpudlian coworker to procure for him some Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. He has long since moved back to England, so I imagine he can get them whenever he wants.

Interesting perspective, TriciaJ. I agree with it to the point that the types bleed over into each other making their traits like a watercolor painting.

Both S & M treat others, both coworkers and staff, in a similar way with a similar attitude.

I always say that in nursing we get the best and the worst humanity has to offer. Unfortunately the worst is, well...bad. Real bad, folks. Case in point:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Toppan

A lovely lady who liked to murder her patients and hold them as they died. Brrrr, that's cold.

There is also the nurse who just loves to be the most put upon person in the room. This is a passive-aggressive power play.

On a lighter (but less G-rated) note, nurses are really into some fun things in the bedroom. And we have the medical know-how to do it in a safer way. I think we're all just a bit touched in the head. Most of us, thankfully, in the fun way.

Haha I used to work at West Edmonton Mall back in the 80s

My initial thought was isn't being a masochist like a nursing pre-requisite? Then I remembered thisth.jpg.49fb434dadd66ec717927ac3d0e06c55.jpg

I guess there are some sadists in the field as well.

Cheers
