Rush GEM Fall 2021

Published

Hello! I haven't seen a thread for Rush yet, fall 21 entry to the generalist entry masters program. I applied earlier this fall and received an interview invite a week or two later. Looking to connect with others!

I thought that was good advice also! I feel like there may be a tendency to do that. ???‍♀️ They did mention that they won’t know/decide till May or June if our classes will be 100% online for the 1st term or not. And that we need to quarantine for 2 weeks in Chicago prior to doing clinicals. So if everything was online and someone decided not to move to Chicago right away, they would need to move to Chicago a few weeks prior to starting the 2nd term so they could quarantine.

I took some notes, so if there is anything you have a question about, I can look and see if it was discussed.

One of the students mentioned that it’s a good idea to get setup with a tutor right away. Another recommended getting an NCLEX prep book and start going over questions to familiarize yourself with that type of questioning and corresponding answers. They also recommended practicing your skills (taking vitals) on your family members and pets.

I wonder if they recommend UWorld? I've heard that it's a good website for someone preparing to take the exam. The price can be a little expensive but I've heard successful stories from it.

Hey guys!

I wasn't able to attend the GEM First Look Student Panel yesterday due to work. Anyone here who did attend, do you have anything helpful you could share?

I didn't know they offered merit based scholarships. I know these are always limited, but nice to know they are out there! Some key takeaways for me: skills checkoffs, very supportive faculty and cohort, and a diverse student panel. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I saw decisions by March 5th?

Yes, decision day is March 5th.

Did anyone get the link for the NCLEX prep book? I copied the link but forgot to paste it somewhere. LOL

@nutbutter_girl & @RoDob:  Where did you guys find the questions for the interview?

I found some in the last class. On all nurses theres a Spring 2021 group where they listed questions.

I looked at the Rush GEM Spring 2021 (I think) and gathered the questions they have. Questions might differ from one interviewer to another but here's what I have gathered:

1. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF
2. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT DOES A NURSE DO? OR WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A NURSE?
3. TELL ME ABOUT A TIME WHEN THINGS DIDN'T GO AS PLANNED AND HOW YOU DEALT WITH IT
4. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING RUSH HAS TO OFFER TO YOU?
5. WHAT IS THE MOST PROBLEMATIC ISSUE WITH RUSH'S PROGRAM FOR YOU? OR WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU THINK YOU MIGHT FACE IN THIS PROGRAM?
6. THE RUSH PROGRAM MAKES A STRONG RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU FULLY COMMIT YOURSELF TO THE PROGRAM, MEANING THE 1ST AND 2ND TERM, YOU SHOULD NOT WORK; DO YOU FORESEE ANY ISSUES WITH THIS?
7. RUSH VALUES DIVERSITY, HOW WOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THAT?
8. WHEN DO YOU FEEL YOU HAD TO STOP MID-WAY OF DOING SOMETHING AND CHANGE YOUR PATH? HOW DID YOU COPE?
9. WHAT ARE SOME LIFESTYLE CHANGES THAT YOU NEED TO MAKE IF YOU WERE ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM?
10. UNK QUESTIONS ABOUT FAMILY/ENVIRONMENT YOU GREW UP IN
11. UNK QUESTIONS ABOUT CURRENT JOB AND WHY LEAVE THE JOB FOR NURSING
12. WHAT MADE YOU GO DOWN THIS PATH OF NURSING?
13. WHAT LIFESTYLE CHANGES WOULD YOU MAKE BESIDES MOVING TO CHICAGO TO ATTEND THIS PROGRAM?
14. WHAT WOULD YOU ADD TO THIS PROGRAM AND TO THE PROFESSION OF NURSING?
15. HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THIS INTERVIEW?
16. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING RUSH HAS TO OFFER?

Sorry for the all CAPS, I was at work while typing it out and we have to type w/ uppercase letters. Hopefully this helps us. I will also look at Youtube videos just like what the other posts said.

Good luck to everyone on your interviews!! ?

thank you I certainly need it.

Hi all! I just had my interview and I want to send positive vibes to everyone interviewing today and next week.

Words of advice:

Don't over prepare. The faculty is not there to try and trip you up; you don't want to sound like scripted robot.

The interview is only 15-20 minutes long, so be as authentic as possible.

Think of the interviewer as a friend you haven't seen in a long time.  Tell them why you want to go to nursing school and why you'd be a good fit.  You know your life and the experiences the best.

And lastly, take a deep breath and tell yourself you're going to do great!

I hope I could help. Good luck to everyone!

Hi there, I also just finished my interview. I agree with @t_ericaw. Just be genuine about who you are as a person. The faculty is just trying to put a face to your application from what I could tell.

Wishing everyone the best of luck.

Finished mine as well. The question was very about you and why you chosen this program and about being a nurse. I hope to hear from y’all again! Best of luck!
