Rumor has it, Lenox Hill Hospital is CLOSING

U.S.A. New York

Published

I was just talking to a new hire at my hospital (NYU) and she recently left Lenox Hill Hospital and word from her along with a few others that came from there is that they are planning to shut down.

Have others heard anything along these lines? Why are they shutting down?

I work at Lenox Hill as well and they definitely try to play up how good the hospital is while they interview you.

Lately, many units have been closing. I know that 3 Wollman, 5 Wollman, 8 Wollman and 9 Wollman all have been closed. When I first got to the hospital, I remember they used to have a VIP unit (4 East) and that ended up getting closed as well as 4 Lachman. It's all a little crazy, especially considering that there are so many nurses now being forced to act as floaters while things settle down.

Luckily, I work for the Step Down ICU and so far so good, there are no signs of our unit closing. I think it's safe to say that the ER, ICU (7 East) & Step Down ICU (7 Lachman), 7 Uris, 5 East/Lachman, 4 Uris and obviously the Interventional Radiology Unit and the Electrophysiology unit will all remain open since those are staples to the operation of the hospital.

Some units are questionable like the orthopedic floor and the oncology unit (4 Wollman). More and more patients are resorting to Hospital for special surgery for orthopedic work and oncology patients rarely come to lenox as much as they used to since Sloan offers the best services in the nation.

We'll see how things turn out, unfortunately, I don't see them getting better anytime soon.

The orthopedic floor won't close anytime soon, that brings in a lot of patients. The oncology unit on the 4th floor is a different story, it always has a low census and the talks have already started amongst the floaters with regards to it closing soon, whether it be rumor or not, I wouldn't pass it by management to pull the plug on it to save some money.

The worse part about it all is that management never lets the nurses in on the issues at hand. I randomly came in to do my regular night shift one day and found my floor closed! Closed! What type of consideration is that?

I'm really sorry to hear that all of this is going on. It sounds like you know your stuff Pediatricnurse.

Maybe all the problems you stated are a big part of the reason why their client-base is decreasing.

You know, I was thinking about this thread today while at work. Two of your Cardiologists have come over to NYU Hospital, one a female and the other a male. Are they abandoning ship before it sinks?

The rumors might very well be true. I work at Lenox Hill on 3 Wollman and they just closed my unit 2 days ago. I showed up to work my regular night shift and found my entire unit empty with no patients, medcarts or anything and had to report to another floor as a float.

To think, I let go of a job offer at Sloan Kettering to work at a fancy Park Avenue hospital only to find myself floating around with my personals in hand trying to fend on another unit.

I cried the entire night..

I was a new hire for 3 Wollman like 3 weeks ago and my start date was going to be on Dec 8th and they called me and said they had to push back the date. I called the nurse manager and she had no clue. I finally got some answers and Lenox is in financial trouble and I was told to find a job else where. I gave up another job for Lenox and they weren't even honest with me until I begged them to let me know.:banghead:

That's the way it works at Lenox Hill. Don't feel too bad, at least you did not start the job to then find yourself getting laid off. I have been with the hospital for many years and one day I just showed up to do my night shift and to my surprise found my unit completely closed off.

Good luck with your search Pinkgator.

That's terrible! Perhaps you can contact that other hospital and they'll still have an opening? Best of luck, hold your chin up, and keep us posted as your support network--hang in there!

It is terrible. I just hope that these new nurses can get a job elsewhere with the month or two of experience that they gained at Lenox.

The other day I heard from my MANAGER that the entire Wollman wing (as in every unit that falls under the Wollman umbrella) is closing during the next few weeks.

What is going on with this hospital?

So a hospital will just have a bunch of empty floors? I guess it happens- I never would have thought it could.

Well, not quite.. You see, every floor at Lenox is composed of 4 distinct units, broken up into the Lachman, East, Wollman and Uris wing. What is essentially going on from what most are saying is that the Wollman wing will be closing after January. In other words, all units that fall under the Wollman wing will be closing and the rest of the units (Uris, Lachman, East) will remain open.

The bigger problem emerges when you realize that there are many particular units that although not belonging to the Wollman wing are already closed (4 East, 4 Lachman, 2 Lachman (By default) and a few others that I can't recall at the moment). So essentially what you have is 25-30% of the hospital closed for "Improvements". That is how layoffs get their start by having a few units close and then more following.

What's sad is that the Nursing Assistants will get placement if and when the hospital decides to completely close while the nurses will be left to fend for themselves. Since the Nursing Assistants belong to 1199, they can be placed in another 1199 facility, yet we the nurses have a union that saw its inception at Lenox, so besides Lenox, we would have nowhere to go or be placed.

Hoping for the best here!

Any chance of the labor and delivery unit closing down?

I was thinking about applying there, to start in summer/fall 2009.

But maybe now I should reconsider.....
