I was just talking to a new hire at my hospital (NYU) and she recently left Lenox Hill Hospital and word from her along with a few others that came from there is that they are planning to shut down.
Have others heard anything along these lines? Why are they shutting down?

Last I heard from a few per diem nurses that do work for us at NYU and at Lenox is that Lenox Hill is going to start laying off nurses after the new year..212
That is true, our nursing resource office has already told many of my friends that are floater nurses that after the New Year they are going to proceed with lay-offs that will include staff from all faucets of the hospital.
What they are not telling us is that since nurses practically run the hospital by way of numbers, the majority of layoffs will come from within nursing. The reason I think they aren't saying that is because, as we all know, as soon as people see/smell blood, it is pretty much guaranteed that they will jump ship. I think the hospital's biggest fear is that nurses will start quitting in large numbers as opposed to what the hospital probably would like to see, which is an organized layoff pattern that while eliminating a vast number nurses will keep the most necessary staff in place as to keep operations going. This is what I am thinking based on the pattern that we are seeing at the hospital now, no one at management or from the union has told us anything.
As it stands, all of the Wollman units will be closed by Christmas, so which units are next is yet to be seen. As long as they stay away from the Lachman units, I won't freak out, but as soon as they come to my side of the building, I will need a few pairs of pampers to keep myself from stumbling over myself.
One of my friends that works on 9 Uris called me a few days ago and told me that her unit has been closed.
The worst part of it all is that management does not let the nurses in on the true workings behind the scenes, instead they play a game of musical units, where once the music stops, no one knows what units will be left open.
LizaTheNurse: I am a CNA at Lenox Hill, and am very disappointed to read what you have written about CNA'S. I am a great CNA, my patient's needs always come first, am not lazy, nor do I hide and don't do my assignments. Also, I donot eat leftover food from patient's trays. However, I've seen RN'S taking trays from the patient's food cart so you should of spoken about that, not just talk about the CNA'S. Also, if you want to talk about lazy staff you should also talk about some of the RN'S who refuses to give their patients a bedpan because their think it's not their job. In Lenox Hill there are some lazy aides and some equally lazy nurses, thankfully, they are in the minority. Most of the nursing staff care for the welfare of the patients.

Damn--that's the unfortunate thing about having their own union---instead of being part of NYSNA---power in numbers.
