Hello everyone. I am new at this site not quite sure how it works:confused: I am seeking info from anyone who has completed or currently enrolled in the Rue-Excelsior independent study program. I am getting ready to pay my down payment but a little bit hesitant. Anybody have any words of wisdom? Thank you.:nuke:

Welcome to the site! Check out our Distance Learning/Independent Study Forum here: https://allnurses.com/forums/f125/

You'll find many valuable opinions and suggestions here. One of the hot debates centers around whether it is better to utilize a publishing company like Rue or enroll directly in Excelsior.

Best of luck to you!

Before you sign any contracts or pay any money to Rue, it would be well worth taking a little time to search and review the older threads here about the company. Lots of info about folks' experiences with and opinions about Rue ...

i havent used rue,but in addition to rue there are other publishing companies.ive used some of the study material from chancellors and the college network-they are usually more money than going straight through excelsior college because the fees they charge you includes excelsior college fees plus the fees for there study guides which cost more than excelsior recomended books .they usually reference the suggested books excelsior requires you to read but in one compat book, for those of us who dont like cross-referencing many books. I WOULDNT SIGN A CONTRACT AND PURCHASE THE BOOKS DIRECTLY FROM THE PUBLISHING COMPANIES BECAUSE YOU MAY LIKE ONE MORE THAN ANOTHER-EX.-chancellors study guides have audio cassettes, but the college net work have more info in that they give you the concepts and then a case study to apply therory and it was better organized to me.

I WOULD GO TO EBAY AND TYPE UP RUE,CHANCELLORS,THE COLLEGE NETWORK, AND EXCELSIOR COLLEGE TO GET THIS BOOKS CHEAP AT AUCTION,I WOULD ALSO REGISTER AT WWW.EXCELSIOR.EDU AND REGISTER ON THERE WEBSITE PULL UP THE CONTENT GUIDES FOR EACH TEST -GET LIST OF RECOMENDED BOOKS AND SEARCH FOR THEM ON EBAY AS WELL.ALSO TYPE UP EXCELSIOR COLLEGE IN YAHOOGROUPS AND JOIN THE DIFFENT GROUPS THEY HAVE GOOD STUDY AIDES IN THEIR FILE SECTIONS ALSO JOIN FLSHCARDEXCHANGE.COM AND REGISTER THERE-ALSO SOME GOOD INFO

I HOPE I WAS ABLE TO HELP+ SORRY 4 SUCH A LONG POST

Oh PLEASE don't sign with RUE until you are 150% sure that it's the right thing for you to do. Do a search on this site and you'll find lots of opinions about RUE. I signed with them and was SO sorry that I did. PM me for details (probably more than you want). :)

Also Check with your Local Community College. I live in Northern MN and I have taken most of my Classes on line. I will Graduate May of 2007 all I have left is Clinicals. and a couple of classes that were not available on line.... ONLY 16 Credits WOOT WOOT....

do a Google Search Type in Distance Education. In doing this I have taken Classes in AZ NY MPLS.. with out leaving my Home. and this is covered by Financial Aid and qualifies for student loans.

Just to reiterate, Rue is NOT a part of Excelsior College. Rue supplies study materials for the courses that Excelsior offers. They also charge a LOT of money. Many people complete Excelsior without utilizing a study guide company (Rue, Chancellors, College Network, DLSI). I used a study guide company and was happy with them, although the $$ was quite high. If I knew then what I know now, I would enroll in Excelsior directly and buy used study guides off of eBay for a lot less that the study guide companies charge. I agree with Spazz....DON"T SIGN with a study guide company until you have researched them. There are lots and lots of posts here about study guide companies like Rue. And, there are lots of other options if you want to use study guides, (buy them used!!! Cheap!!!) Many of these study guide companies imply that they are part of Excelsior college...but they ARE NOT! In fact, Excelsior college is now offering "guided learning packages" for a lot of their courses. So check out all of your options first.

I just spoke with Rue again today and have made the decision to sign with them. I have thought it out in so many different scenarios and going through Rue is what is going to work best for me. I don't want to go to community college for all the general ed classes that i have to take. After compairing the community college and Rue, Rue is actually cheaper for me. I like the fact that i can pay as i go. Even if Rue was more expensive, to me it would be worth paying the extra simply for the convenience of being able to do everything at home and on my own time. My community college doesn't offer that many online courses and I do NOT want to go back to the classroom!! I have 2 children (7 and 4) and I am working part time as an LPN. You have to do what is right for you. Everyone has thier opinions and I'm sure for some people going directly through EC was the better choice for them. This was my personal choice and I am ready to get started!! Good luck and let me know what you decide to do!!
