After reading the post about whether spouses were in the medical field, it reminded me of a comment that my husband made to me that to this day he regrets. (It was over 5 years ago.) I had been an LPN for about 10 years and we were discussing an RN that we have known for a long time and he said, "Oh, she's the one who is a REAL nurse, right?".............yes, the silence was defeaning (sp), then.................to top it off, when I said, "Excuse me, I AM a NURSE!!!" he said, "Well, I just meant that she had a degree." ....................Oh, did he pay for that one. I was so angry that he didn't even understand what he had said!!!! Believe me, he does now!!!
During start of shift a couple weeks ago the unit clerk told me "you guys are going to busy, their are only two nurses". We had two RN's and two LPN's. Not nice.
I looked at the LPN I was working with and she just rolled her eyes. We are buddies and the private joke of the night was when she would tell me " I can't get that - you will have to get a nurse to help you".
I hate the "just a nurse" phrase. Unfortunately all too often we use it about ourselves. "I'm just the nurse, you have to ask your doctor about that...." "No I'm just a nurse....."
I am a diabetes educator. I feel like I'm not a real nurse anymore. And I'm an RN, MSN! I feel badly for the way some facilities utilize LPNs. LPNs are the same as an LPN, but just can't take phone orders, sign off orders, start IVs, or give IV push meds. I don't think LPNs are given enough money for the work they do. And this comes from an RN of 27 years, who has spent el mucho years as a staff nurse.

Where I work we often get comments about LPN's not being 'real nurses', especially by doctors. our joke around the nurses station is that LPN stands for 'little play nurse' and RN stands for 'real nurse'. but seriously, it is ridiculous.
one of my friends said to me once, "i don't understand why nurses make so much money. i mean, all you do is empty bedpans, right?"
The words still sting in my heart and ears when I hear people making fun of nurses.
When my divorce from my children's father happened in 1988, several months post the divorce, his bimbo he married BEFORE divorcing me mailed a lengthy letter to my home with these words at the top: "A few tea-leaves for you..." Then, she proceeded to insult me. One of the things in her "tea-leaves" was this:
"As an Associate Degree Nurse, all you'll ever be entitled to do is wipe ass for a living......"
Well, I've been waiting for the opportunity to get her as a patient so she can be admitted with the "runs" so I can tell her to wipe her own ass because I'm no longer entitled to do that....she'll have to call a CNA to do that task as I'm too busy making sure my patients survive under my care. Would she like to be my first victim?

OH...another thing I'd tell her when she screams for a pain pill is that I'm NOT entitled to pass meds, just wipe azz for a living so guess she'll just have to suffer.

I am still in nursing school, but when I first started my pre-reqs two years ago my fiancee didn't understand why I couldn't go out partying all weekend. He told me "Why do you always have to study all the time to learn how to empty bed-pans and wipe rear ends." He is now my EX-FIANCE. He is also a Kindergarten teacher so I called him a "glorifed babysitter." I didn't mean this I think teaching is a wonderful and noble profession, I just wanted to get back at him. I am now dating a bed-pan emptier/rear end wiper who is a RN at the hospital I work at. I will also be one in 24 months LOL. I start my ADN program in two weeks.
I passed my RN boards 3 months ago, but the great part is, I have pretty much the exact same job, but occasionally I have to do an IV. Nothing has changed, only the title--and the pay. One of our former CSM's, that used to think that nurses were SO RUDE for not helping them with their work--keep in mind if we stop every time they need help, we prolong the time we are there after the shift--needless to say, they walk out the door at quitting time---anyway, she has recently got her RN and she went to work for a hospital about 20 miles away--she lasted two days!!! When I asked her why, she said, "You just can't believe how busy it is, it's crazy, you can't get your work done!" "The nurses are there for two hours past their shift!" I turned and said, "So it's different here......how???" She has worked for about three weeks as an RN and she said, wow, reality set in, I didn't realize how much work you guys did and how stressful it is. HALLELUJIAH!!!! She saw the light!!!!
