Rude disruptive classmates (Vent)

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem...
I'm in the first round of my LPN program and while there are a lot of students (like myself) who actively participate and are actually interested in the material and WANT to do well, there is a large (and it seems growing) of rude people who will audibly groan and roll there eyes whenever someones hand goes up, ***** and complain about EVERYTHING, will trash talk people within earshot (normally they are accused of being suckups, know-it-alls, etc.) and generally act like they are bored to tears and terribly inconvenienced to be in school in the first place.
Am I missing something here? I paid a very large sum of money to go to my school and made a LOT of sacrifices to go there, not to mention I'm preparing for my CAREER. So I'm going to ask as many questions as I need to and I'm going to treat my teachers with respect because they are GRADING me for gods sake, and I'm going to treat my fellow classmates with respect because we are supposed to be on the same team. I am trying to just let it roll off my back but it's aggravating when I know that whatever question I ask I'm likely going to have the answer yelled at me by 3 other students and then hear someone go "oh my GOD!" in the background. I'm just curious to hear from those of you who have completed or are further along in school... Is this going to continue the whole time? Or is this just what happens before the "weeding out"? I normally am not one to have ill-wishes but my gosh I can't wait for some of these idiots to fail out of the program :icon_roll

How often do you ask questions in class? Do you ask questions that were just answered and you just need clarification? Do you find yourself "jumping ahead" and asking questions that will most likely be answered in a few minutes?

I am one of those people that gets annoyed when certain people ask questions. I don't mind the one or two, but there are some people in my class who ask questions every five minutes. Instead of computing it, or just going home to look it up, they'll throw the class off topic for five-10 minutes asking a question that can easily be answered by 1.) Paying attention, 2.) Using your brain connect the dots, and 3.) Looking it up yourself.

There are also some questions that need to be discussed after class. If you are that thrown off about what's going on, you need to discuss those things in the instructors office. When you have to ask a question every five minutes to "clarify" something, there's clearly more going on than just a need for clarification.

For one class we have a teacher that actually TEACHES the material in a way that is understandable and relevant to the nursing process, and in her class I barely ever ask questions because I value her lectures. But for our Fundamentals class we have professors that read from the book the entire class and then give critical thinking questions on our exams. So if I see something and feel that an example would be useful, heck yeah I'm gonna ask to put it into context since that is what we are going to be tested on (and because it is how we need to think as nurses) I personally get more out of having a discussion and bouncing ideas off of people, and I think many people feel the same way but are afraid to stick their head out because of the rude, snarky people.

Recognize it for what it is - immature behavior--and let it go. Do what it is you need to do to satisfy your learning needs. The shoutouts are doing what they need to do to satisfy their emotional needs. Whether or not they get weeded out is a matter for the universe to decide. Karma extracts its payment from us all in the end. There is something for us all to learn from each other.

What I found in LPN school (and now in RN school) is the eye rollers and the "theatric sighers" usually end up bombing on the test, because they think they know it all already. Then they get P'd and accuse those of us who say, "hey, it says X on page 234 and Y on page 310, so which is it?" of being a kiss up.

You know what? This is YOUR opportunity to learn. As long as you're not acting crazy (I had one girl in LPN school who related every disease we studied to either herself or a family member -- we didn't care, and we weren't learning while she was showboating), make sure you get what you need to pass. The world weary, eye rolling know it alls -- when they get to the floor as a nurse, if they make it that far, they usually get terminated in the middle of their orientation.

Our class started in january with nearly 50 people. It was chock full of eye rollers and complainers. Now, on April 13th we have only 23 students left, all of the noisy eye rollers? Gone. Dropped out or flunked out. Don't worry, your class will thin itself out as well, most do.

I'm like you, i just hate when people ask questions every few minutes and it's disrupting to other students who are trying to listen to what the instructor is saying. i'm not saying a student shouldn't ask questions as i've done so many times in class, but what gets me is when these questions are "could you repeat that"? or just totally stop the teacher in her tracks to say something unnecessary that could wait when it's over.

there's one student in class who has no clue about anything that involves nursing. she comes from a totally different field and she's always interrupting the teacher with silly questions about how something works or what is that and do they really have people who are secretary's on nursing units? omg it is sooo annoying!

Since your classmates do not seem to appreciate your 'participation' and have been quite verbal about it, maybe you should ask the questions after class or make an appointment with the instructor. You are not the only one who paid a ton of money and made sacrifices for this new career. If, OTOH, these are truly rude and snarky students, the instructor should recognize that and have more control over her class. Maybe speak to the teachers about your concern.

OK...so I should just sit there and stay mute, listen to the instructor drone on and ask no questions just because a few people are annoyed by me? There are over 70 of us in the class. I am not the only one that asks questions and I'm not the only one who gets the feedback either. Also, these are students who usually don't pay attention in the first place. They sit in the back of the class and I see them either talking to each other, texting, sleeping, or listening to headphones when they aren't griping and moaning about how boring the class is and how annoying everyone who isn't them are. So it's not like they are upset that they are missing out on the lecture, they are appalled that some of us actually want to listen to it.

I read all the material before I get to class, I listen attentively and I only ask questions where there seems to be conflicting logic or something that doesn't seem to "fit". And 9 times out of 10, other people chime in and say they were wondering the same thing. So no, it's not that I'm just slow to the jump and too lazy too figure stuff out for myself, I just happen to love what I'm going to school for and want to learn as much as I can in the short time I have before I'm out there on my own.

lol! Oh we do absolutely have a few "show-boaters" who have apparently had every disease known to man...

I don't pry into how other people are doing but I see a lot of these same people griping about "unfair tests" when our grades are posted...

I'm kind of confused from this thread. You say that the people who get irritated at you aren't doing anything but three people shout out the answers? If they weren't so interested in learning, how would they know the answers? Just curious.

I find threads like these interesting. I know that I am the type of learner who pays attention and reads the book BEFORE class, so instead of raising my hand to ask questions because I haven't read the material, I raise my hand to ask pertinent information about a specific item when it comes up. I also know that I, too, can be a snarky person when it comes to the eye rolling and a loud sigh because it is VERY disruptive when a person asks questions every five minutes. I know that you state that you learn by having a discussion and bouncing things off other people but that's what a study group is for. Also, I have noticed that the people who really don't want to be there are not the eye rollers. Those people are the talkers and the texters and the whatevers but not the people that shout out the answers.
