I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.
My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*
I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)
Wish me luck!!!
i know the waiting game is no fun but remember, they are currently working to get everything situated for the fall 2010 classes and new students (might be why they aren't meeting till mid-sept). also remember they are a group of about 3-5 people in the office handling anywhere between 500-700 applications, along with 20+ class of about 30 students each semester, and 100-125 graduates each semester.
also they only look at your gpa they are not in anyway concerned with races, genders, ect. they literally take your name and gpa, plug you into a spreadsheet and then hit the sort button. then they look at how many seats they have for the semester (164 for fall 2010). go down the list and stop at 164. they then pick i think it was 5 alternates and send your letter. once you get your letter and accept you will wait about a month or so to get a campus assignment. there again it is based on your gpa (make sure you rank your campuses) and repeat the same process.
hope it helps in easing some minds and remember like all of us they are only human and mistakes happen so if you feel there might be a mistake ask but remember how many others might also be asking and try and be patient.
Crynholder,
Wow, you know more about the process than anyone has told me. lol Thanks for posting! When you say "make sure to rank your campuses"...when exactly do we get to do that? When I submitted my app, I got to choose my first campus choice, not my second or third choice.
THanks again!
I am suddenly starting to freak out again.
What exactly is this Audit under the "progress towards your degree" section of webadvisor?
Mine has suddenly changed, and states that I have completed everything but two of my prereqs, which I took at USF. Under my the documents status everything says received including my USF transcripts, and the nursing prerequisites.
Is anyone else who went did their prereqs at two different schools having this same issue? Could it be that they simply haven't gotten around to evaluating my USF transcript, or could it be that they lost it? ( I have heard that it happens a lot)

Don't worry about it, I have been to 4 different colleges, which includes HCC, and only my HCC courses appear; however in "my documents" the transcripts from the other colleges appear with their names but it says "not received"." I think another student that was accepted for the Fall 2010 said that sometimes things don't change until after all the acceptance letter go out..... Don't worry! Read some of the prior posts.... I feel your pain!
it’s okay if you didn't rank them (realized you all had already submitted your applications after i posted).....here is what they do; based on your gpa and where you fall in the ranked list you will either get the campus you chose or whatever campus has spaced left when they get to your name. but after the first semester you will more than likely be able to switch campuses if you do not get your first choice right now, at least that’s what they told us at orientation (all based on if people drop from the program at the campus you want). if you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Crynholder...I chose Dale Mabry since I live in Lutz. If I had all A's in everything except two B's from my high school's dual-enrollment English 1 and College Algebra...thus giving me a prerequisite GPA of 3.714, what do you think are my chances of getting in? I'm accepting an LPN invite at PHCC for August, but may leave if HCC accepts me for January. Also, they don't look at Honors Societies, President's List, previous degrees, or anything else? And finally, how do they choose clinical sites for accepted students?
as far as campus assignment, you should be fine in getting the campus of your choice...only a handful of people didn't get what they wanted but your gpa should keep you at dale mabry but it all depends on how many people are above you.
all they look at is gpa, as mrs. sandrowitz, program manager, said she doesn't even care if you live across from hcc's president. they truly put your name in a spreadsheet with your gpa and campus choice next to it then sort based on your gpa. no other criteria is considered unless you and someone else fall in the last spot then they look at your overall gpa of every classes you have every taken at the college level and see who’s is higher.
clinical sites, from what we were told, are decided by the instructor. in the clinic they can only have groups of 12 or less for clinical instructor so in a class of 36 you will have no more than 3 groups. if i remember right, the instructs’ may let you pick which site you would prefer but it is ultimately up to the professor. let me know if you have any question and remember to try and relax because it is for the most part out of your control till you here from them in sept.
Awesome...thanks for the quick and precise reply. Glad to hear I stand a chance and that there's no hidden admissions processes. Who would I be able to ask questions to about actual program numbers?? Examples: How many applied/accepted? NCLEX pass rate? Student graduation/dropout rate? Job placement %? Also, what are backgrounds of the instructors? Do we have a choice of who to take for classes like Fundamentals? If you can't tell...I can be a little OCD. Thanks again for your time and help! I think answers to some of these will help my decision if I have to choose between HCC and other schools.

I would say an advisor can answer all of this (last applicaion round there was about 600 applicants, 164 choosen for Fall 2010 and the cut off GPA was 3.4). NCLEX pass rates you would be able to find online (where? I do not know). The other information you might want to see if they are offering an informational session and see if you can attend. As far as instructors you will not get to pick who it is there's normally only one or two at each campus for the session you are in. I would suggest that you go to hawknet registration and look which instructors are currenlty at HCC teaching NP 1 for the Fall 2010 semester then you might be able to google them and see if anything comes up.

You can find the quarterly NCLEX passing rates for each Florida school at:

Thank you so much for posting this! With HCC having over a 90% pass rate on the NCLEX, I feel totally reassured for ONLY applying there! lol
Ugh, I hate waiting...I can't even focus on my summer classes (which is why I'm posting on here right now)!
I have never been one to wish my time away....but September is coming sooooo slowly!

I guess if they cashed your $53 check, they got your application and there was no problem. I emailed M.F. (can't say names!) yesterday about the timeline since I have letters from other schools and she said they don't MEET until mid-late SEPTEMBER. So...that means I have to accept my letter for August and possibly drop out if I get an acceptance in October to HCC. And not to be THAT guy...but because they're a public school...I bet they have a committee to make sure there are "appropriate ratios" of all races, genders, ect. Just wait and see!
