I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.
My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*
I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)
Wish me luck!!!
thanks, so I guess it all depends on how they end up calculating it. But I'm going that they don't count +/- grades, if that's the case then it looks like I would have anywhere from a 3.21 to a 3.57. Uggg, I really wish i had cared more when I was in college the first time. That D in Algebra and C in Micro are what absolutely kill me. The funny thing is that when I took college algebra I had already taken calculus and gotten a B in it. Blah. Thanks for the help Dewytwix.
Amgonzal,
Read the HCC Nursing Admissions Manual:
An Introduction to the Admissions Process for HEALTH SCIENCE PROGRAMS
PAGE 18
Repeating/withdrawing from prerequisite courses: Applicants may have 2 attempts per prerequisite course taken after 1997 on their academic record without being penalized.
Withdrawals, academic withdrawals and other non-calculated grades are considered attempts:
The State of Florida statute prohibits HCC from allowing a student to retake a course when the student has taken the course previously and received a "C" or higher grade. In addition, HCC will transfer in a course from another institution, that course before and received a grade of "C" or higher, the more recent grade will not be used in any grade point calculation.

Based on the grades you noted your GPA would be 3.43, which is based on:
Eng 3 4 12
Sociol3412
Micro 326
Micro Lab133
API 339
LAB I133
APII 3412
LAB II133
Algebra3412Based on the above they would count the retake of Algebra YEAH!
2172
GPA3.428571429
Of course this depends on the Micro class you took at USF, what you made in that class and how HCC handles that class...... I'm not the expert but the GPA of 3.43 should be about right.....
My GPA depends on which math class they choose to use. If they include College Algebra(which I took 3 times years ago when I wasn't serious about school) i will be penalized .2 on my GPA which will equal 3.65. lf they use my Calculus, my GPA would be 3.71.
My application check finally cleared today, so I'm a little relieved.
hcc does not use +/-. i attended u. of tampa and received a couple a's and a couple of a-'s my first semester of college. the next semester i transferred to hcc and they calculated my gpa as a 4.0 and showed all my grades as a's. granted this was back in 2004 but since i have returned to school (also with a few +/- grades from my ba from usf) and when they calculated my gpa for nursing (fall 2010) there again they did not factor +/-.
i will be starting this fall and know the nervousness that comes with the waiting game. as i have told others along with myself, as hard as it is to stay calm remember that it is now out of your hands and to enjoy this time because if you get in you will be thankful for this time off! good luck to all those who are applying!
Hi!
I am also an applicant for the Spring '11 start...and I was wondering...when all of you log into web registration and check your "documents", do they all say that they haven't been received and are due ASAP? Mine do (even my H.S. transcripts which I gave to HCC in 2008), and when I emailed the lady in charge of the processing to see if I should resubmit ALL of those documents, she only said "we have just begun to process applications." Sooo, I'm worried about it!
Hi there, everyone!
You might want to check out the feed entitiled HCC Fall 2010... After surviving the application process at HCC, getting accepted, and attending the first day of orientation TODAY, I decided to check on others that might be going through the exact same process. Many of your questions will be answered, there, through our worrisome process!! Good luck and if I can help in any way, I would love to!
:)
To add to Nick's post they took 162 people. Also if you do not get your campus choice for the first semester...do not worry they said you will be able to move campuses after the first semester, but know people would have to drop to allow that to happen. Hope this info puts your minds a little at ease and might help.
