Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

Published

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

she said campus assignments would be going out this week? Does this mean that alternates and appeals have already been choosen and gone out? Thanks in advance, I am an alternate and am wondering whether or not i Should be on the look out for a letter. Fingers crossed. :)

I'm not sure if she meant the letters for alternates/appeals too, if I were you, I'd email and ask her! Good luck!

Happymomma,

I got a reply from M.F. and she said she'll be mailing out the campus assignments towards the end of this week!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!

Yayyyyyyyy, I am so excited! I can't believe you got a response from her, I emailed her Thursday and still haven't gotten a response

mm, well when I emailed her a few weeks ago, she told me that letters for alternates should be going out by the end of the month. But i can keep hoping.

Im am impatiently waiting also, I hope that since letters for campus assignments are going out that means alternate/appeals will be getting letters to, or we will know just by whether we get a campus assignment letter or not. im just ready to know something

Okay well I didn't get an email from M.F. but my profile has been updated and no longer says "Applicant"!!!! :yeah:

i'm applying for the fall of 2011... i have already applied online to the school itself... do i have to send a money order for the $20 app fee and anoher money order for my application? AND submit transcripts to the school or just to the nursing department, or both? sry i'm totally confused and live 4 hrs away from HCC

What I did was send my transcripts to the school AND included them in my application package. It takes the school a long time to get the computer system updated so don't count on them being there on time if you just hand them into admissions. As for the application fee I just included one check that included both the college application fee and the nursing application fee with my application package. The one tip I would give you is to cover ALL of your bases and make sure that EVERYTHING is in you application package. When in doubt just send doubles and make sure that everything that is on the application check list is in the package. GOOD LUCK!!! :)

THANK YOU A BILLION TIMES OVER!!!!! I will do just that.. with a 3.71 the only i can see holding me back is the application's overall "togetherness" lol and i appreciate your help!

I agree with happymomma, send doubles.... Make sure the transcripts that you include with your nursing application are in a sealed envelopes. Make copies of everything and send a postcard for the response that they got your application. Double check everything before sending.... Good luck!

Shamanai, I would really recommend that you speak to an advisor at HCC to confirm exactly how they want you to proceed. You could "try" to call, but unfortunately I haven't had much luck with anything when I call any campus. Although you live so far, if at all possible, it would be very beneficial for you to visit a campus and see an advisor. Have a list of questions with you so you don't forget to ask something, and make sure when you leave, you KNOW EXACTLY what you need to do. I have learned how to handle advisors/financial aid counselors, etc, in the past 2 years. lol You can't just assume anything, you have to be very specific when you ask questions. Also, keep records...when you request that your transcripts are sent over to HCC, write down who you spoke with when you requested them, what day you requested them, etc. Also, be very persistant with HCC when you check to make sure they receive your application/transcripts/etc. One little oversight could cost you your seat in the nursing program. (As for the HCC application fee to be accepted into the college itself (not the nursing program app fee)...I never had to pay it.)

I hope this helps, and good luck! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask us!

That's strange! She emailed me back first thing on Monday ( I emailed her on Fri)...I cannot wait for that letter to come! I would email her again....but I'm controlling myself. LOL I just wish she had said which day she was going to mail them out. I would just like to know if I can expect mine tomorrow....or not until Saturday!!! UGH!
