Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

i thought about getting the cpr out of the early too but i talked to a friend of mine, who just started in the hcc radiology program this fall, and she said that her letter said the same thing..." cpr certification is required by the first day of class." but at orientation the people who already took cpr were told sorry for wasting your money but you will have to take it(and pay)again wit us... so i know money is tight (for me anyway)...i think i will be waiting until orientation to be sure how this works or maybe someone is reading this from the fall admissions and can elaborate for us?....just a thought for everyone id hate for any of us to "waste" money- we have and will have alot of expenses.....congrats everyone!

I got an alternate spot :-/ does anyone know how this works, or how many alternates they take. i know i have to accept my alternate spot by oct 4th , will i find out after the 4th if i got a spot or is it another long wait?

I hear you on that one, I ordered one off of EBay the other day so I should have it this week some time. What campus and time did you put in for?

I put in for PC; however I was hoping that they would have us fill out another request because I sort of want DM since I already work in South Tampa. It's no big deal --- where ever I end up is fine.... I GOT IN! That's all that matters.....

I read that they send out letters to everyone as well.

crynholder: Thank you for the positive info, hearing from someone who is going through the program make me so much more excited! Do you have any suggestions for preparing for us? I have ordered older versions of the clinical calculations book and an NCLEX study guide to read over while I am waiting because I head all our tests will be given NCLEX style (got them each for under $5 each on Ebay).

Happymomma:

You will be fine with the older versions of the Cal book and NCLEX. As far as the test go a can't really tell you much "class policy" plus each teacher is different in the way they test. Ours uses mostly NCLEX but we do have fill in the blank/short answer. I will tell you know that the tables/figures/boxes in the PP book are great. Also the NCLEX questions in the back of the book and on the evolve website are helpful.

Also to start reading I would say read Chapter 1-5, 17-20 and if you can read about hygiene, safety, exercise and activity, mobility and immobility; and if you are feeling really ambitious read about assessment.

Congrats to all of those who got in and for any who didn't, don't get discouraged keep pursuing your dream.

Crynholder, I was wondering how many sets of scrubs I'll need. Which campus do you go to, and do you wear your scrubs to lectures too, or ONLY to the clinical? I know someone in the program at PC, and she ONLY wears them to the clinical and recommended that I save some money and only get one set. What do you think?

I personally have two sets, one I wear (nice ones) and one set I will be taking to clinicals just in case something happens to the ones I am wearing (cheap ones). I also got two name tags, one I keep in my bag and one in my car just in case (you will learn about them in orientation). Also I am at PC nights and we only wear our scrubs to clinicals.

Ok, thanks! You have been SOOO much help through all of this, I really appreciate it!

Hey y'all. I applied to DM campus for the evening program and got my denial letter today saying they didn't get one of my transcripts. If anyone is willing to help me out, I'm not going to go through the appeals crap if I'm not going to get in based on GPA. I'm wondering if anyone who is listed as an alternate would be willing to share what their GPA is. My prereq GPA is a 3.4... so I'm definitely teetering toward not getting in just based upon that. Can anyone share and give me some direction on whether or not it'd be worth my time to go through appeals? Thanks in advance y'all.

i got an alternate spot and had a 3.33 but i didnt apply for the evening program so im not sure if that makes any difference

I say still go through with appeals since you never know. They told me the same thing about not getting a transcript (for a school I never went to) and I just looked and noticed that they also said I'm pursuing an AS in Biotech (which I'm not). Maybe you can ask what the cutoff was during counseling. I say if you really want it, keep at it. :)

My fiance and I both received letters today. Hers was for the alternate list and mine was that of a denial. After months of their hard work they have miscalculated my gpa and awarded me a gpa of a 3.0. I find it quite reprehensible that they could not have taken more time to check, in my opinion, simple math. I then find myself wondering if we will be graded on such simple math in school. That this simple math could be the difference between an A and a B, or worse that of a patients life. I would hope that this mistake was not made by individuals in charge of the nursing program, but by underlings whose main responsibility consists of mopping and dusting, and occasionally miscalculating math problems. It is not my intent to rain on any persons parade, but to express dismay at the fundamentally misguided system that we put our hope and trust in.

I've got a bad feeling about the letter I'm waiting for. I have a 4.0 with hcc and a B in English from UT and a B in a higher level microbiology from ut which gives me a 3.67. I'm wondering if they will decline me too because they didn't look at the transcripts. I can't believe some of the errors I am hearing about. They were so fast to send usfcheer a denial. Do they think we are that stupid that we spent months or years of work on this and they just assume we don't have the classes and we were too stupid to not know enough to take them before applying? Another thing about hcc. They have had my transcripts on file for a year. Advising told me they don't get officially reviewed until we graduate....and people here are now paying the price for their incompetence. Not acceptable.
