Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

For those of you who are appealing.... absolutely go through with it. I think it was spring of 2010 class, there was a young lady who was denied and she went through the appeals process. It was close to the starting date of school but she did finally get in. Go read other posts and you will see that they in fact do make mistakes with gpa. I aslo read where the alternate that was on here did get in too.

My heart hurts for you because I am sure your very discouraged. You still have some options but try appealing first. Also if you have a bachelors, USF has an accelerated program that they are now only calculating your pre reqs and not your overall GPA. Since most of us fooled around in college with our first degree, we are tied to those old 20 year grades. USF has information sessions every friday that you can attend to get your questions answered.

We all will be waiting to see how your appeals go. If ANYBODY has some suggestions on other schools or options I am sure it would be nice to post for this thread.

I received my letter yesterday, and I was denied, the cut off for gpa was 3.44

I received my acceptance letter yesterday. My GPA is 3.73

:yeah:CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS GOTTEN THEIR ACCEPTANCE LETTERS SO FAR!!!!!

I AM DOING A HAPPY DANCE FOR US ALL!!!!!

:dancgrp:

Crynholder, I have another question! I'm starting to look at the things I know I'm gonna need, such as a stethoscope, scrubs, etc... and I was wondering, can we get a stethoscope with any color tube? And, I know our scrub tops have to be "port wine" color, but do you know of anyplace that sells cute ones? lol And can our white bottoms be the cargo style?

Would you recommend waiting until after orientation to buy that stuff?

Thanks again!!

Do our bottoms have to be white or can they be the wine color too?

Our bottoms have to be white...and from what I've read on the Fall '10 thread, our tops have to be "Port wine" color. They said that HCC is very picky about that, which stinks because I've found some cute tops that are just 'wine' colored!

Aw man I am not too big on not matching, and thanks to them for the white pants, I just can't keep white clean! I think the wine color you are talking about is okay because someone put on the 2010 thread about Landau brand and theirs is called wine. Here is the link to the one I was looking at:

Crynholder can you tell me if this is an acceptable color and if not where can we find "Port Wine"?

LOL, I can't keep it clean either...but that's ok! I found that Barco sells "Grey's Anatomy Juniors 5-pocket" pants that are a really cute cargo style. I LOVE that top in the link you posted. I have found a couple others, I just worry about wasting money if I'm not gonna be allowed to wear them. I posted over in the Fall '10 thread too, but haven't gotten a reply yet.

I am sooo excited, I want to go out and buy stuff...but it's still sooooo early. I hate to buy something and then have to put it up for three and a half months!

Hey there everyone...

I am currently in NP1 and apologize for not being able to offer help earlier...things have been pretty busy as you can imagine!

To answer a few questions...

YES...cargo style pants are fine. I chose KOI brand (Lindsey style)...because they are SO cute AND made from a REALLY comfortable material! Yes, they have to be white... :uhoh3:

The empire waist top from Landau is exactly the one I chose...and the color is perfect even though it is called "Wine" instead of Port Wine.

Your stethoscope can be ANY color, so have at it!! I would suggest getting it engraved, as we have heard that they easily "walk away". If you can afford a Littmann, get one...they are the best and will truly help when trying to clearly hear breath/heart sounds. I chose the Classic I SE...others in my class have the Littmann Lite...they are both great choices.

My biggest suggestions from a reading/studying standpoint:

1) Get the Clinical Calculations book NOW and work every problem in the book. (Except for the chapter on IV's/enteral.) It is completely self-taught and you will be tested in Week 3. If you don't pass this test within 3 tries, you FAIL for the semester. It is NOT difficult...but you MUST teach yourself and practice these problems in order to be comfortable with the test, etc. Pick ONE formula that you prefer, and stick with it!

2) Buy Potter & Perry ahead of time, and READ!! The following chapters will REALLY help you get a jumpstart:

Chapters 32-35, 37-39, 41,47, 48, and any others that you can...but those will help ALOT in the first few weeks. (The amount of reading is absolutely overwhelming!!)

3) Buy a Medical Terminology book, if you have no prior medical experience. I bought Medical Terminology for Dummies...it is a little redundant, but very effective in giving a basic knowledge of the terminology!

Some people bought the "package deal" from the bookstore...I didn't. It is a personal preference, but I didn't want to wait for the books to be available and they WEREN'T available in the bookstore until literally the WEEK BEFORE CLASS!! That may not be the case for you guys...the bookstore was in the middle of a move, etc...

Gotta run for now...hope this helps...hang in there and try not to stress too much! Good luck to you all!:)

Thank you so much for all the WONDERFUL information!!! You made my day about the shirt, I really was having a hard time finding cute ones in the right color. I really appreciate the recommendation on the pants I was flying blind while going through them, they all seemed to look alike eventually LOL.

So basically READ READ READ and then READ some more! Well I guess I know what we will be doing during the holidays this year.

Hey this is my first time on this website. I am really hoping to get into the program as well. Only by the grace of Jesus Christ.
