RN's - how long did you stay at your first job?

Published

Just a quick poll - how long did you stay at your first job before looking to another facility? And was it long term care, rehab, acute care or critical care? What are the pros and cons of your facility?

Me: I started my first RN job in Feb of this year on a med surge unit. I absolutely love it. The staff is great for the most part, the nurses here have a strong voice in how things are run and the benefits are great. The cons? I travel very far each day. I haven't grown tired of it yet but some days like construction or accidents that cause and extra 30m to an hour make me wonder. And I am in the minority - literally. The area is not diverse and because of that, neither is the facility. Which makes me hesitant to move.

Just curious how others are making out.

a year and a half while I finished my BSN. It was a good job and I didn't appreciate it like I should have. I quit to move 'home' but no hospital I have ever worked at was as good as that one. However if I hadn't left I would have not met my husband and had the wonderful children/family that I have. oh well...

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

I'm still at my first job, just over 2 years now. But I plan to leave it within the next 2 months for something else. Have something in the works that will pan out.

I currently work a sub acute rehab unit in a SNF. I love my patients, but this isn't what I want to do long term. This is my first RN job, and started this past January, I was actively seeking a hospital position, but didn't have any luck. I just got promoted to supervisor, so I decided to stop looking for a few months, to fill up my resume some more.

I remained at my first nursing job at a LTC facility for six weeks. I left because I landed a position that was much closer to home, paid more, had more attractive work hours, and offered a benefits package.
Specializes in Pediatrics.

1st job with the title RN was flu clinics, then private duty Peds for 5 months until I found a full time gig.

Went to a LTAC/SNF was there for 7 months, transferred to a different facility same company was there for 3 months while at the same 3 months was working PRN at a pediatric LTC, then the peds place offered me a full time position.

I stayed 2.5 years, and then I got a position in acute pediatrics, I have been here for 1.5 years and have an interview on Thursday for the pediatric ED of my hospital. If I don't get the ED position I am more than happy to stay were I am. I truly love my job, but the ED has been calling me ever since I worked in one was as a tech during nursing school, but I know I don't want to work with adults, so this interview is basically my dream job.

6 months in medsurg then transferred to NICU for 2 years. Same hospital :)
