The Republican National Committee is pausing its participation in 2024 GOP primary debates, the organization decided Friday.

The RNC's decision, made by a 16-member internal body, means that any forthcoming debates will be hosted by networks independently of the committee. Two outlets — ABC and CNN — have announced plans to host future debates in Iowa and New Hampshire ahead of early state voting. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis already said he will attend CNN's planned Iowa debate before next month's caucuses and ABC's planned New Hampshire debate.

"We have held four successful debates across the country with the most conservative partners in the history of a Republican primary. We have no RNC debates scheduled in January and any debates currently scheduled are not affiliated with the RNC,” the RNC's Committee on Presidential Debates said in a statement. "It is now time for Republican primary voters to decide who will be our next President and candidates are free to use any forum or format to communicate to voters as they see fit.”...

It seems that they can't control their candidates on the stage and Trump doesn't want to show up so why bother.  Debates have no relevance to a presidential election.  Didn't Trump teach us that?

Chicken?  Hell, yes!!  How are Republicans supposed to get any feel for the differences between their candidates if they can't watch them debate?  Oh, I know the answer to this one.  Fox will tell them everything Fox thinks they need to know.

I think it's more them throwing in the towel after Trump has continued to refuse to participate.  Why bother when the clear favorite declines to participate.  The debates without him have been declining in viewers.   Frankly, I'm glad because Trump in a debate is always a shite show because he doesn't know how to act like a mature adult candidate.

The debates seem to be helping Nikii Haley, and I wonder if that is one of the reasons they want to bow out of debates because they want Trump and think he's the one to beat Biden.

I wonder if Trump's election team is keeping him from situations where he might be challenged to give a cogent reply. A Christian college in Iowa declined to sponsor a Trump appearance in the form of a rally. They traditionally have candidates take questions from students, but this didn't suit the Trump campaign,

"Iowa state representative and Dordt faculty member Dr. Jeff Taylor confirmed that he had been working as a liaison between the university and the Trump campaign. Taylor said the decision to not host the Trump event was made last Friday by Dordt administrators,” the television station reported.

The university also confirmed to me that Trump will no longer appear on campus.

"The Trump campaign started the process of lining up a campaign stop but desired a rally format. Dordt understood that President Trump's visit would not be publicized until the format was finalized after the new year,” they wrote in a prepared statement. "Ultimately, the vision of the Trump campaign and Dordt were incongruent, and the event will not take place at the university.”
