RN Work schedules for INOVA

Published

What are the shifts for the new grads? Are the shifts permanent or does your schedule constantly change? How long do you have to work as a nurse before you can land a 7am-7pm shift? Is that even possible? Does the typical nurse work 36-40 hours a week? Do you still get benefits if you only work 36 hours a week?

I have read here a few times in posts that new grads work rotating days and nights there. I don't know how long that goes for, though. I assume most places new grads work 3 12-hour shifts per week - most of the time hospitals seem to give benefits over 30 or 32 hours, but that just seems to be a norm, it's not a guarantee or anything.

I work for an Inova hospital, doing 36 hours per week (3 12's). That's considered full-time.

How you're scheduled depends on where you work. Where I am, we have set schedules and set shifts, for the most part. When I'm off of orientation, I'll be doing a combination of 7a-7p and 11a-11p (7a one weekend, 11a the next -- and weekends at my request).

What floor do you work on at INOVA?

I work in an ER.

INOVA Loudoun is unique in that not everyone is required as a new grad to rotate 50/50 like the other INOVAs. You can be hired day or night depending on what is available. The other hospitals will have day/night rotations for 12 hour shifts. If you're trying to avoid nights, try the GE lab, cath lab, OR, IR, special procedures, and dialysis.

I have a question regarding scheduling. Do all of the inpatient units in the Fairfax area (Inova, Reston) have the RNs working 12 hour shifts? Any chance of doing 8 hour shifts? I'm an RN returning to practice and getting ready to apply for jobs. I have two little ones and it would be so much easier if I could work 8 hour shifts. I really don't even care if I have to rotate to nights.

Reston has more 8 hour shifts for regular units since they offer 3 shifts. Inova is mainly 12 hours except for units that do mainly procedures.

Thanks for the information! :)

Probably depends on the hospital and floor. At my particular Inova hospital (Mount Vernon) and unit, scheduling is pretty nice. We fill out when we want to work and when we absolutely need off and that's the schedule we usually get, at least in my experience. I have chosen to work straight nights. Nobody I know rotates days/nights, it's one or the other. You could come to my floor as a new grad and work 7am-7pm. You might not have as much choice over your schedule at first while orienting as you end up generally working your preceptor's schedule but after that, it's pretty flexible. 3 shifts a week is full-time with benefits. 2 shifts a week is part-time with some benefits as well. We do have some people who do 8 hour shifts. Not many but a few.

joseash- what floor do you work on, out of curiousity? I'm starting to seriously look for a job now and am very interested as to how this all works.... :)

It's a med-surg floor. 3B. I think there are openings posted on the website but you can also call and speak with our manager/patient care director to see if anything might work with your schedule. She's a really great manager.
