RN work from home due to illness

Nurses Disabilities

Updated:   Published

Does anyone know of legitimate work for an RN that can be done from home?

I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and even the clothes that other nurses, physicians, patients or their family members wear can cause a flare up. My specialists insist that I must find work from home or I will have a deteriorating course of my neurological system to the point that it will be permanent. I am currently working as a dialysis RN in a local hospital and am feeling quite ill every day that I go in to work.

There is no getting around the cleaners and what other people are wearing. I have approximately 22 years worth of Nursing experience in varied fields of nursing. I feel that surely there must be some online or telephonic work out there for me. I keep running into dead ends. If anyone knows of a site that I can go to or a person to call, please let me know. Thanks

Have you tried Craig's list? they usually have jobs like the ones you're looking for.

Don't give up; God will make a way.

I have been a nurse for over 30 years and worked for 18 1/2 years in the OR when I got cancer. I had surgery and radiation but then developed pelvic and lower extremity lymphedema. I could no longer lift, stand for hours, or work on-call so I applied for an open position for which I met the qualifications (as a triage nurse for the same employer). I applied and mentioned ADA standards for transfer to this open postion. Per ADA rules, if you request job accommodations and are qualified for an open position, you do not have to compete for this job. But Human Resources claimed they knew nothing about this and gave the job to another "more qualified" applicant. I was told that I was finished at the end of the week and would no longer be working in the OR. I was put under Risk Management and assigned "light duty" assisting the Infection Control nurse and also taking patient histories for admissions for 3 months. Then I was transferred to the Coding Department where I was assigned to assist with billing and clerical duties for the next 9 months. Then I was told that there was no budget for this position and I would have to find something else. In the meantime, my husband who also worked here was injured on the job and was out of work. I lost my health benefits because he was the primary on the policy. The Coding Department offered me a position but it was at a significant pay cut and I was required to go back to school and obtain coding certification. I am still in school and in my current position I abstract administration charges for infusion services. I am hoping that the infusion documents will go electronic so I can work from home. And once I finish the coding program, I will try to do some real coding and pick up additional work through an agency. I know that I will need a few years of hospital coding experience before I can code from home. I continue to search online for other options so I can eventually work remotely.

This is alonge here. Still working but now for a call center. They had to move me from booth to booth before they could find a place where I wasn't bothered as much by other people. I still get reactions daily and feel like I have the flu every morning, but I keep plugging along. I am still searching for an online job, so if anyone has come across any that are actually hiring, please let me know. Thanks.

Balong, this is jazzeray57, I am also a disabiled RN looking for online work from home. I had a brain aneurysm Feb 29 1996. It burst and I had brain surgery. I have a few deficits like short term memory loss. I did try to work in nursing but I had to write every detail down. This was a lot of extra work. If I find something I will let you know. If you find anything you let me know. There has to be something we can do.:clown:

Talk to your state's version of the bureau of vocational rehab/rehab services commission (BVR/RSC)! They can be wonderful at pairing you up with employers for appropriate jobs, will get you equipment and services to aid you in working, and help you pay for additional schooling if you need it to obtain a job better-suited to your current abilities. I've returned to school for a bachelor's degree in Health Information Management with BVR's help and there are plenty of those jobs out there! With a background in nursing, you all would be excellent candidates. Don't give up! Good luck!

I too am looking for a nursing job at home. I have been legally blind for 15 years due to retinitis pigmentosa but still have some central vision left. Who would want a sight impaired nurse at the bedside? But I am perfectly capable of doing triage or quality assurance. I wish you all luck and will let you know if I find anything interesting.

Medical billing and coding is a possibility. you can go to MD offices and for a percentage you can work on their denial /appeals and look at the chart as a trained nurse and find even more $!

While home visiting my folks my father got a call from his nurse from the insurance company to check up on them. My dad is a very congenial person who likes to chat so, she had about a 30 min conversation. And who doesn't want someone to call and ask about there health. Check into this.

Appreciate all this information. What is apparent from the posts is no matter how long you work for an organization, how many positive reviews you have, how many extra days you work for them (or hours), nor how few sick days you use, when ypou no longer fit their scheme of things, they no longer have a relationship with you and they just do not care. I found that out long ago, and it has held true over 42 years. I need to leave my current job, 3 years till retirement, and I'm going ot explore all the options.
