First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.
I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol
When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.
In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.
So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >
Thanks for reading!
If I don't get into any of the programs I am going to take a science elective at UFV (which I will do anyway even if I get in, just at a later time.. Maybe summer?) because then I will have the requirements for an associate of arts degree... Super general and only half a degree but at least it's SOMETHING and I think the schools take certifications into account?
I am also anxious. Just started Libs 7002 and anatomy online today, so hopefully that will keep me distracted while I wait....and wait....and wait :) There are 2 girls so far in my Libs class that claim to already be registered for Jan 2012...maybe they deferred their seats?? anyways, keeping my fingers crossed for all of us!
Hi KarlyAC,
Yes, having some accreditation helps you get points for the Nursing at Douglas. I needed points so bad when it came to applying to Douglas that I applied for a General Studies Diploma as I was missing the Calculas courses needed to obtain an Associates of Science Degree. That really helped me alot, and of course the 300+ hours of volunteers gave me full points the the Volunteer/Work hours category.
As for BCIT, I'm just really anxious. I have a back up plan now, but I'm still wanting that spot at BCIT.
I did apply for UFV, but was not so particular of getting in as I did not want to be stuck in Chilliwack for 4 years, I enjoy the city life. :)
Reading what you have so far, I think your best bet would be BCIT, Doulgas, and VCC! You'll get into one or the other. Good luck! :)
Hello, UNBC's collaborative programs at Northwest Community College in Terrace and NCC in Quesnel have historically had less applications so are easier to get into.I heard that UNBC Prince George had 350 applicants for 90 seats this year, which sounds high but is alot less than Douglas College which gets about 600 for roughly the same amount of seats. I have also heard that Selkirk College in Castlegar gtes less applications. None of them hold wait-lists so it is still a competitive entry. All good schools, but in more isolated areas so less apllicants. At the end of the 4 years though you still have your BSN though. Good luck to all!
I have my info session coming up next week for the BSN program at UFV. Will be writing the essay on topics given to us. Im so nervous! Anyone else applying to UFV? Just wondering if anyone would like to share what grades/experience they have? My friend that applied has an interview already. I didn't think we were asked for interviews until after the essay was written! Happy for her but now more nervous that this intake wont be the one for me!! We will know in time!
Last spring I applied for BCIT and Douglass (Jan 2012 intake) and to UNBC/CNC (September 2011 intake).
I got accepted into CNC so I moved up here to Prince George and have begun the program.
I am still waiting on my acceptance decision from BCIT/Douglas, and if they accept me I'll probably finish up the first semester here in CNC then "start over" again at BCIT/Douglas.
Nothing wrong with the nursing program at cnc/unbc, but frankly I don't like living in Prince George.

Hey ladies! I am getting restless waiting for my application results!! Congrats Noona! I'm waiting to hear back from BCIT Douglas and UFV still. I met with an advisor at UFV last week to try and figure something out if I don't get in this time around (It is my first time applying to all). I have 63 UFV credits, luckily I meet all the requirements with the electives outlined by smiley65 :) I have over 500 work experience hours at a retirement home (where I'm currently employed full time), my gpa is 2.9. I wish it were higher and I know it will be the next time around as I was uncertain what I was doing in school and not taking it entirely seriously about 3 years ago. Unfortunately I haven't heard from Douglas yet.. Or anywhere for that matter. I love that this forum exists to vent about this annoyingly long wait haha. One of my friends graduated from BCIT last year and is LOVING life post nursing degree. I can't wait for that to be us one day lol!
