RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

oh okay.. I though it would be a little later. My friend who got accepted into the August 2011 intake just started this monday

Your friend must be so excited! I cant remember where I read that so it could be wrong. you could always make a quick call to admissions to see if they have set the dates yet for Jan....

AHA! It is Jan 9 2012..... Our first term is Jan 9 to May 12. If you go onto student aid bc, it is possible to apply for a student loan now for Jan intake, and since you have to apply every level for financial aid , the first level is listed.

The countdown is on! Less than a week before review starts! Lets hope the process goes smoothly and everyone hears good news in Sept...

oh thanks! im soo impatient I hate that this is taking so long

Hi Everyone!

I'm new! I've just read everyones post! I've also applied for JAN 2012 intake at BCIT, I got into Douglas for the same intake, but I'm really wanting to get into BCIT.

So to put my stats in there as well. I have about 100 credits into my Biology degree at UFV. My GPA is a 2.50, I know, not outstanding, but I tried my best. I have about 300 volunteer hours, and I have the first year english, two psychology, and two third year liberal arts elective that is needed. What I do not have is LIBS 7001, LIBS 7002, and HMGT. So what does everyone think, do I have what it takes to get in?

I'm waiting for the admissions officer to further review our applications, and it's killing me inside!

Hi Noonaa :) welcome

Since you have 100 post secondary and most of the 'extra' courses PLUS 300 volunteer hours....I would say you have nothing to worry about....But I'm just a fellow applicant :) Where did you do your volunteer work? Hospital or other?? congrats on getting into Douglas...at least you have a back up plan :) No one will have the HMGT as you need to be registered in a health care program to take that one. I have 7001 and am starting 7002 next week. 4.07 GPA, 50 volunteer hours (and counting) but only 63 post secondary...a diploma but no degree....life experience etc... the waiting is tough :)

Hi Everyone!

I'm new! I've just read everyones post! I've also applied for JAN 2012 intake at BCIT, I got into Douglas for the same intake, but I'm really wanting to get into BCIT.

Hi Noonaa,

You say you got into Jan intake at Douglas, how long ago did you find out? I'm waiting to hear about Winter 2012 intake for Psych Nursing (which as far as I could figure out is about 2 weeks behind the RN program in terms of getting offers out) but so far I can't find anyone that has heard.

Hi Smiley65,

I did my volunteer work at both the Abbotsford Cancer Center and a old folks care home. I came in to volunteer whenever I could at both places and those 300 hours I managed to do it in a years time frame. Don't worry, 50 hours will turn into 100 very fast. If you don't get into a school for Jan intake apply for the next. And make sure you apply more than one school. :) I applied to VCC, BCIT, Douglas, UFV once before, and got into none of them. This time around was my second time, and Douglas was the first to get back at me, but I'm hoping that BCIT will give me an offer NOW! lol

I'm not sure if both of my third year Liberal studies class transfer though because I know that it's hard to transfer courses in and out of BCIT. If they don't transfer to you think it would affect my application?

Kaylee88,

I got my letter of offer just last week. I had to submit a $370 deposit, CPR& Standard first aid, and health assessment form. I submitted these all yesterday to seal my seat just incase BCIT doesn't get back to me.

I'm not sure how the admissions officer assesses the Psyc Nurse application but you should know soon. Emailing the admissions officer wouldn't hurt; everyones very nice! I know, all of this waiting kills, but GOOD LUCK! :)

As far as the electives go, I think as long as they are 200 level or higher u should be ok. I have a list of the approved courses if you want, I can PM them to you. BCIT is good at seeing the whole applicant and not just a bunch of numbers but since I'm not on the selection committee, I can't really say:) they take everything into consideration. I am only applying at BCIT. If I font get in, I will apply again....and again :)

Smiley65,

If you can send me that list of approved courses that would be great! Thank you soo much! Another question, since you seem to know so much :), does GPA matter in the application process? A 2.50 isn't bad, but it isn't great either. :( Let me know what you think! Thanks! :)

The 6 credits must be at a 200 level or higher in the following subject areas:

AnthropologyArt HistoryCanadian StudiesClassical StudiesCultural Studies

EnglishHistoryHumanitiesLiteratureMusic History

Native StudiesPhilosophyPolitical SciencePsychologyReligious Studies

SociologyTheologyWomen’s Studies

For my 2 electives, I took Philosophy 230 and 240, I took the 2 Psychs, 2 Philosophies and Eng at Cap U. Nothing will transfer for Libs 7001 and 7002.

I really don't know that much. I have been preparing for this intake for over a year so I have done some research :) I don't know how much GPA matters, only that they take everything into consideration and it depends who you are up against. If everyone applying for this intake has a similar GPA then it won't matter. They take the students who are well rounded and who they feel have the best chance for success in the program. I'm sure a higher GPA would benefit you but you also have other things that balance you out, like all that volunteer work. :) we will just have to wait and see I guess.
