RN school wait lists in BC

World Canada CA Programs

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

Hey again! What exactly does your application status say? Mine says Pending Department Review. Then there are 8 Requirement things at the bottom. Getting so impatient! I really want to go to BCIT over the other schools and I feel like I haven't heard from them in forever haha.

Still pending department review.....REVIEW ALREADY!! Mine list 7 things under requirements

it has bio, chem, math, eng, 2 spots for my 2 different post secondary transcripts and a place for resume, all received july 19th, application created june 24, nothing under notes....In other news I found out that there is a guaranteed spot for me to go back to volunteering at BCCH in Sept (I took the summer off) in the ICU, which I'm so excited for! I miss those kids.

Mine said missing requirements too but I contacted someone and got them to change it, i'm sure it will be fine!!

PS - to get them to change it I had to stalk like all the BCIT nursing contact info on the website. I emailed everyone and eventually someone forwarded me to a dept head and he changed it.

ahh you two are amazing thank you! I've been freaking out like crazy the past few days. I'll definitely stalk BCIT contacts on Monday and hopefully they can change it for me.

@smiley65, Yeah I assumed it would be okay because the document deadline isn't until Aug 31st but I couldn't help myself. I actually haven't volunteered this summer in childlife, I've been going to the mental health clinic more so; but previously I was in 3R tuesday afternoons:)

lol, I would be the exact same way. I just thought I would let you guys know that I have emailed my admissions officer to ask for more clarity on dates. I know we all want to know asap if we are in and there doesn't seem to be any really clear answer anywhere. 2-8 weeks....but from when? from when I applied? from application deadline? anyways, I just asked if they have deadlines so we might have a better idea. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything

Thanks! I can't wait to hear what they say!

@karlyac -me neither.....It seems to be taking forever to find out. Have you read any of the bcit nursing forums on cnsa.ca? Last January's intake didn't hear until October :( I guess all we can do is wait. Have you done the Libs courses yet, 7001 and 7002?

OCTOBER ?!?!?!?!!!!!?!!??!

Wow. Lol, I guess my answer is pretty clear, no I haven't heard that. I don't have the Ethics course but I have first, second and third year UNI English courses and i'm pretty sure the first year ones satisfy the critical reading & writing requirement. I should probably look into that. I applied to a few different programs, each with their own support courses so I would like to know where I'm going before I satisfy one and then get into another. If you know what I mean..

Ya I totally get that, which is another reason why I am only applying to BCIT. I spent so much time time satisfying their specific pre req's, it would take forever to get the required stuff for a different program......you should check out that forum, there's a lot of helpful info. MAKE SURE you look into the libs 7001, as far as I know they don't accept anything as transfer....which sucks because it's a pretty basic course...but you would have the Eng 1177 requirement for sure and psych? From what I have read, it makes a big difference if you have completed at least 12 of the 24 credits from the self scheduled list

P.S have you heard anything from the other schools? How many points do have for Douglas?

Yep! I've checked on bctransferguide and those courses are all good, phew! So I guess I just have to do the Libs courses, not so bad. Either way, it's going to be a heavy course load. The other programs take my previous first and second year Biology courses into account unfortunately I can't use them at BCIT. I have no idea where I stand there.

Good news! Just got an email and my application status is now updated to pending dept review:)
