Greetings!
After reading past informal survey posts on allnurses, I wanted to pose this question for 2013. The intent of this post to to give myself and others a good range of pay for nurses across the US right now based on experience and location. This will be an informal guide for me to start a masters paper on (Subject: area cost of living and nurses salary). Several years ago I believe Houston was voted for best place for a nurse with cost of living adjusted, but I think this might be changing.
Things to note while reading other's salaries:
-Generally, high paying locations relate to high cost of living (SF, NYC, etc). The reverse seems to be true as well (lower cost of living=lower pay). 65$/hr may be the norm in San Francisco, but the average 1br apartment is $2800 without parking and a house costs well over $1 million. Please take this into account. We live in a big country and cost of living varies widely (especially housing costs)
If you post, please state your:
1. State you work in
2. Years of experience
3. Specialty/unit and work setting (clinic, hospital, prison, etc)
4. Hourly Pay (base rate) or salary
5. Differentials (if any)
6. Union?
1. GA
2.
3. ICU
4. $20/hr
5. Evenings $2.25, nights $2.75, I forget what weekends are
6. Not a chance in the world!
Rent plus my utilities comes out to right around $1100-$1200/month, so I'm definitely not able to save as much as I want to. Housing is really cheap here, though, but the housing market is really bad and houses are almost impossible to sell for a good price, so rent is really inflated. :/
1. NE PA-1hr from Philly-large magnet hospital.
2.
3. MSICU
4. All new rns start at 24/hr. Just got a raise though so I'm at 24.48. 4k/ tuition reimbursement.
5. 0.75 for nights. Nothing for weekends unless you do weekend only program
6. Nope
We just bought a 4 bedroom single family home on 1.5 acres for 300k. Taxes are 5600/yr. cost of living is pretty high, but compared to the immediate philly suburbs (where we are originally from), we got a good deal on our house and property.
Seeing everyone's rate and cost of housing kind of makes me want to move. I absolutely LOVE where I work though, and I can't imagine being somewhere else. Looking forward to going to work means more than money to me.

No Unions here
Expensive to live here and insurance for me and my new baby costs me $400/month. Struggling to survive and support my family. My rent is $900/month not including utilities. Gas and food also not cheap either. Considering moving because I'm struggling to make it.
