Greetings!
After reading past informal survey posts on allnurses, I wanted to pose this question for 2013. The intent of this post to to give myself and others a good range of pay for nurses across the US right now based on experience and location. This will be an informal guide for me to start a masters paper on (Subject: area cost of living and nurses salary). Several years ago I believe Houston was voted for best place for a nurse with cost of living adjusted, but I think this might be changing.
Things to note while reading other's salaries:
-Generally, high paying locations relate to high cost of living (SF, NYC, etc). The reverse seems to be true as well (lower cost of living=lower pay). 65$/hr may be the norm in San Francisco, but the average 1br apartment is $2800 without parking and a house costs well over $1 million. Please take this into account. We live in a big country and cost of living varies widely (especially housing costs)
If you post, please state your:
1. State you work in
2. Years of experience
3. Specialty/unit and work setting (clinic, hospital, prison, etc)
4. Hourly Pay (base rate) or salary
5. Differentials (if any)
6. Union?

2. New grad BSN, no experience
3.Mother/Baby at a level 1 trauma center
4. $18/hourly
5.$4 nights, $3 weekends, not sure about any others
6.not sure
Cost of living is actually way lower here (I moved from NM) my 900 sq foot apartment plus water/electricity/cable/internet ect totals up t a little under $1,000 a month. I live in a nice area, large apartment, in a great complex. Hope this helps :)
1. Indiana-East Central
2. 40
3. SNF-national chain
4 26.00/hr
5. None. No holiday pay. No raises for the past 3 yrs; management states probably none in the future. Time and a half for OT.
6. Nope
I rent a 3BR 1.5bath house, 2 car garage for $1,000/mo. It's a small town and they control utilities- water, sewage, electricity $200-250/month. I plan to move out of state in the next year or two, so all this info is helpful.
1. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
2. 4 months, new grad
3.med surg/ telemetry
4 20/ hr for BSN (19.75 for ADNs)
5. $5 diff for NOC and weekend and $4 for eves.
6. Ha! I wish
I am from CA, couldn't get a job and look forward to coming back! My rent is almost $1000, cost of living is not cheap in this area for how much they pay us. I am barely scraping by with this joke of a paycheck. CA is where it's at. I miss ratios, unions and a solid paycheck.
1. NW Florida (near alabama)
2. 2 years
3.med surg
4 19.56/hr
5. $5 nightshift, $4 between 3pm and 7pm, $2 weekends. Currently there is a WOW (work on weekends) contract that gives $12 more an hour, but the hospital is about to nix that. They've also just nixed our wound care team, IV team, admissions team, and I heard RT may be next...thus I am jumping ship from this trainwreck.
6. Of course there are no unions in this area. People don't believe in them around here unfortunately.
Cost of living: You can get a decent 3/2 house for about $150-175k, rent a decent house for probably about $1000-1200/mo. I know our cost of living is better than some areas like california, but I don't think it's low enough to make up for our crappy wages in this area.

Sounds like the national chain I work for with the exception of holiday pay. We do get that in the form of PTO, and I hear rumors that may be decreasing.

2. Years of experience: 0 (New Grad Residency)
3. Specialty/unit and work setting (clinic, hospital, prison, etc): IMC acute care hospital setting
