I've found that usually algebra/math modeling and statistics are required for RN core reqs. The best way to avoid taking unwanted math courses would be to contact the nursing academic advisors at the list of schools you are considering and working closely with them to assure you're following their core expectations. Hope this helps.
Schools can be different with the math pre-reqs. My previous school wanted Statistics, so I'm taking that now over the summer. I found out at the school I'm currently at that they take either College Algebra or Stats. (Btw, I'm in a BSN program.) Just check on the websites or call the nursing department of prospective schools that you are interested in and they should tell you what you need to take.
It really depends on the school. I thought that since I was staying in the same community college system that the maths would transfer but that wasn't the case. I took Contemporary Mathematics for the first program was entering because I was scared of college algebra. Life took some twists and turns and I'm now in a different part of the state, the CC here does not acknowledge the Contemporary Mathematics...in fact they actually require the math to be taken prior to APPLYING for the nursing program!!! I chose to take Statistics because I plan to get my BSN and it is a requirement so I'll kill two birds.
I also took a few math classes as an early childhood education major, they didn't count either. I hate math but it seems I've taken almost as many college math classes as I have science.
