Rn moving to fl from nyc after 26 years

U.S.A. Florida

Hello Everyone! After 26 years and accomplishing my RN degree here in NYC I'm ready for a change! I'm SOOOO OVER this city! I visited FL a couple of times for vacation and family visits and i love it! I'm looking to move either to the coral springs or fort lauderdale area. Just a few questions....

  1. What major hospitals I can apply for in those areas?
  2. What is the base pay salary for an RN AAS with 3 years of home care experience?
  3. Anything I need to know that will help me get the job?
  4. Are there any RN's that moved to FL and regret making the move? and if so what are the positives & negatives?

Sorry to hear that @double_minority, They need nurses in our department like yesterday. I think you should go in person to home health department and apply! Best of Luck!

You know what, I definitely am. I am taking another recognizance trip next week to Miami, at the same token dropping one of my cars at family. That's a great opportunity to do so.

Please accept a PM from me :-)

Wow, your health insurance is how much?! I pay $200+ per pay period for a family ( btw it's $157 for a single person) here in virginia, working for a medical giant that owns every doctor's office i visit, and I have to pay $40 copays. Which goes great with making $24/ hr as an experienced ICU nurse.

I'm originally from Brooklyn , and we are looking to move to florida this summer.

Wow 24 an hour. That is low for what I would expect from VA. I live in NJ and told Lee would probably offer me 30 an hour. Still much less than what I earn now....

Tell me about it, I made twice this amount being a new grad in NYC in 2008. I live in southern Virginia, which is much lower income from northern VA by Washington DC

This is a position strictly for priceless ICU experience. When I called Tampa hospital I was told my base would be $30/hr, plus differential and certification

I was looking at Cape Coral. Tampa seems nice too !

yea sure! @double_minority, you need my email?

ir sure is bisson! but I thought it was high, i guess not;) 40 copay? 200 per pay period? okay thats bananas:no:

yea sure! @double_minority, you need my email?

Hey CRN85,

Yes for sure send it to me thru pm. I've sent you a Private Message, mid-May, not sure if you ever gotten it.

How is life in Cape Coral going ??

Hola,

First I would like to thank everyone that commented on this post. It was really helpful not only for me , but for many who were transitioning into moving to FL and other states. I feel like It is my duty to come back and update my experience as many of you did. I'm going to be real as possible. After a few months in FL, Things was getting tough for me. My sister ended up staying in NY which made things very complicated financially. Lesson #1- Never depend on others on such a big move. I love the area were I lived in. Lakes at college point to be more specific. Nice gated community with all amenities. But did not have time to enjoy it. After my probationary period, there was no help in Lee Memorial, you were on your own. I believe someone mentioned it before in another post, They were RIGHT! When it comes to home health/hospital, you need on going support, from my experience I did not receive that. I had a lot of issues even called a meeting with the director. I felt like I was being treated unfairly. I was seeing 7-8 patients per day, when others were only seeing 3-4. In one patient visit you last about 1.5-2 hours. Remember you have to input doctors order, wound care, PICC line, IV,etc. Plus Documentation. People at work started to show there true colors. As a minority I started to feel uncomfortable, specially working and living in a predominantly white neighborhood. I started seeing KKK flags more then usual, not good :speechless:. I made a few friends, all felt the same way, coming from out of town. Almost all my friends either went back to NY, Boston, etc. I did the same. I moved back to NY, well NJ in september of 2014. Got offered a 82,000/year position here in NY. Of course I couldn't pass that up . Mind you my lease isn't up, until feb of this year. So I'm still paying for it and the utilities, including ADT system. Social life. There was none. I worked every other weekend to make ends meet. Theres not really place to socialize only downtown fort myers and a few places in cape coral. Unless your a housewife with kids, is not going to work out psychosocially. Lesson #2- Research the area, stay for a few weeks and then decide if its good for your SITUATION and family. Lesson #3- Clear all your debts before moving. Bringing debt when your trying to start a new journey is no bueno:(. Remember you're getting payed less and your rent will NOT be cheaper. Again depends in were you live. If you want to live comfortably your rent will NOT be cheaper. Period. A few of you was right when you mentioned it in other posts as well. At this point in my life I'm, proud of myself. I made the move many don't make in their lifetime. For now at this stage in my life NY,NJ works better. I guess I just had to land the right job. I was living pay check to paycheck in the city, but I did so in FL as well, even worse I had more bills in FL when you do the complete math. Also I was by myself, in a town 3.5 hours away from my family in Miami, in new job with no support and debt. With the salary I'm getting payed now, it has been enough for me to recover from FL, pay the apt I left behind, which I have to go back next month and move all my stuff to storage and start saving for my masters. All in all. I did the move and lived to share my experience. YOU do the same. Not everyones outcome or situation is the same. For me the only reason I'll be back to FL is to visit, maybe buy a condo I can stay in every month/rent or retirement. Aside from those things, no thank you:nono:. So go for it!, for me it didn't work out, hopefully for all fellow nurses who are planning to move to another state, it does.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL!

I am a former NYC-to-FL-and-back person, but this was actually all just before I became a nurse. In fact, the move back north was propelled by the fact that I decided to attend nursing school in NY over UCF. I dont have any regrets. I loved the 5 years I spent in FL but I really got over it and wanted to get back. I am a New Yorker at heart! :) Living and visiting FL are definitely 2 different things. If I were to visit FL again, it would not be like it was before I moved there, that is for sure!

My insurance too is about 200+ with me and a child and its not even PPO, I can only see doctors within their network. I live in chicago trying to relocate to florida. I make 28.55 here in chicago but florida hospital only offered me 23?!!! I was shocked. Anyone have any suggestions?
