Has anyone ever thought about going to med school sometime after they finished their BSN? I've toyed with the idea, but don't know if it's the right choice at this time. Just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there.
Originally posted by TeresaRN2bI've actually thought about it, but I always fall back to the fact that I really don't like doctors very much. If given a choice I will always choose a nurse practicioner or nurse midwife over a doctor for just about everything. I thought about it a lot, but if I do anything I will go on to be either a nurse midwife or nurse practicioner depending on what specialty I wind up in (still haven't decided on that). Although I still haven't completely ruled out medical school, but it is doubtful with my family obligations that it would ever happen.

I agree with you there. Most docs I dont like- they see things differently than nurses do I think, and my kids take #1 priority in my life.
Plus why would I want to take any more Chemistry classes than I have to? LOL

I have often thought about that as well. I have always enjoyed the sciences, but I feel like I'm to old now to realistically go the medical route. I have heard there is an age limit for admittance into medical programs, is that true?
On another note, with the problems that exist between doctors and nurses that's always being talked about. I feel like a lot of the problems could be solved if for the pre-med, the bachelors requirement for doctors should be in nursing, that way the doctors could do the pre-med in a health related field that incorporates a closer relationship with patients. This way would also expose the doctors to what nurses really do and maybe promote more empathy between the two groups. The extra science classes and math required for the medical program could be taken prior to taking the MCAT. I have always heard the rave reviews about doctors who started out as nurses. How caring they were, how well they got along with staff, etc, etc. Just a thought. B.T.H

Tell me more about your brother- how did they inspire and how did the discourage you from it?
My thoughts exactly. :)
My brother is an amazing guy. He had a degree in forestry, and then built custom recurve bows for a living for a couple of years before he decided to enter medicine. He had a terrible GPA to be applying with (around a 3.0) and did average on the MCAT. He applied to our state school three times, and finally got accepted off the waitlist by the time he was 30. He's now chief resident in Tupelo, MS (family practice).
I was incredibly inspired by him - his drive.. he wanted it so badly, and he made it. He now has a job he loves, doing something important, is well-respected, and will soon be making a fabulous income.
The down side - he sacrificed a LOT to get where he is. When his children and his wife found out I was a pre-med, they begged me to change my mind. Told me to consider nursing, x-ray tech, sonography, anything but medicine. I've heard countless stories from my 12-year old niece about how her Dad wasn't there for some of the important things in her life because he was at the hospital on call, or buried in books studying. A doctor's time is never really his own...
That's it for now, I'm still groggy this morning (our electricity went out overnight and I overslept and am late getting in to work), so that may not be very clear. Maybe I'll try to post more on this subject later. :)

There was a new law passed to keep Med residents from working that much. There max work week is now 80 hours a week. This just went into effect a couple of weeks ago.
Just thought I would give everyone the heads up! :)

I'm also interested in hearing what Manna's fam said.
I'm not planning on telling anyone that really knows me. My BF knows, but he knows not to say too much right now, he just wants me to take the classes I need and he said just act like this is what you want, it can't hurt you.
I don't have kids and money's not the issue, atleast that's what my BF says, so, we'll see. No matter what, I'm doing nursing so atleast I will have the degree and can decide in the future.
