RN to BSN at University of Phoenix?

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey everyone, my very first post but a long time observer at this forum.

I graduated earlier this year in June with an ASN degree and now looking to work on my BSN, seeing how the job hunt

is going nowhere for me. I tried to apply at San Jose State University here in Ca., but they've put a lock on the Fall 2010 semester. Now I am looking at the University of Phoenix online option. I was wondering if anyone here taken the RN to BSN route at University of Phoenix, either online or on-campus? I know they're approved by the CA BRN, but I want to know how good are the instructors and their curriculum? Basically any information would be helpful at this point. Thanks alot!

Find out if the hospital you want to work will accept online diplomas. I know Stanford will not.

Would you hire someone who got their BSN from university of phoenix? I sure as heck wouldnt.

I got my BSN as well as MSN from University of Phoenix and I assure you that many, many people are just fine hiring me! UofP does not provide a diploma, but rather a degree for experienced RNs who wish to finish their BSN. I assure you I have worked in multiple states both as an RN and advanced practice nurse and no one

First, please don't speak about a program unless you have some experience with it....could I ask you to site your source?

University of Phoenix is fully accredited and it's graduates do go on to post-MSN education without a problem.

To the original poster - I received both a BSN and MSN from UofP and have had no problems going further with my education and career. The only drawback that I can come up with is that it is expensive. However, the education is fine.

Yes. My source is a HR manager who told me they just throw away resumes they get when they see they went to some for profit center like U of Phoenix.

Im sure you can find a job with it like you did. But lets be honest here. With all things being equal (experience, grades, etc) - if person A got their BSN at U of Phoenix and person B got theirs at a real brick and mortar academic establishment like say... the University of California, person B will be hired the majority of the time.

I think every school should be forced to disclose their graduate's employment statistics just like companies are required to disclose their earnings and financial statements to their shareholders. There are thousands of people who are being conned by a boom in these for-profit "universities" with the notion that their job prospects will be the similar to that of a true university.

Caveat emptor.

May I ask your educational background and credentials to critique the quality of a degree program?

I (and my 18 years of nursing experience) stand behind that UofP is fully accredited and being a graduate from there is nothing but a positive experience.

You don't need a PhD to realize that a BSN from a brick and mortar university is better regarded by most than one from a for profit online university like U of Phoenix. My educational background is irrelevant to the discussion at hand and can only be used for illogical ad hominem arguments.

You obviously have own opinion on the matter. I guess if I went to a school and someone cast some doubt on my alma mater I would feel the need to defend it. Well then again...I value where my degree(s) come from. But im not going to kid myself and say it is regarded just as highly as one from Yale/Harvard/Princeton. I'm simply warning people that they should take a good hard look at any school and not to kid themselves.

Simply put, it matters where your degree came from, especially if its from an online for-profit "university".

CSU Stanislaus is accepting applications for their RN to BSN program until Feb. 1. They are also starting an online program fall 2010.

Incidentally, I just finished an RN to BSN program at a brick and mortar university, and one of my instructors there had received her MSN from University of Phoenix. So I guess it worked well for her. :D

What about ? I've heard excellent things about their programs (not specifically nursing), and they're mostly online. http://www.wgu.edu/online_health_professions_degrees/bachelor_science_nursing

They offer RN->BSN (fully online), they're accredited and affordable as well. I'm imagine would be considered favorably compared to University of Phoenix (which many do consider a degree mill to some extent - not to offend those who have graduated from UP; I am not intimately familiar with their program).

As a former hiring manager at a large (23 providers) medical practice, I can assure you that I would never devalue anyone's education or toss away their resume because of the schools they attended. University of Phoenix, whether classes are taken online or on campus, does not hand degrees to anyone who wants one. It is an education that is WORKED for.

I have 3 friends currently doing the RN to BSN route through U of P, in 2 very different sectors of the US. They are all WORKING for their degrees. They study, write papers, participate in discussions, etc as if they were taking online classes through a "brick and mortar" college. Just because the classes are online does not devalue the education they are WORKING for.

BTW, the only way to obtain a RN to BSN degree in my city is to take online classes through the local UNIVERSITY. Trauma, I am with you on this. I'm curious about Agrippa's credentials.
