Resident of Canada...former UK nurse, how to work in Canada?

Published

Hi All

I used to be a member here several years ago, was meant to be relocating with an agency to USA and it all fell through! Anyways I was a registered nurse (Diploma) in the UK and worked for two years. I passed the Nclex and moved to the USA for 3 years...I did not work there. I am now a permanent resident of Canada. I never kept up my license in the UK and have not worked as a nurse for over three years now. I do not know if I want to still be a nurse but I am not quite sure what else to work as at the moment! If I did want to nurse again, what would I need to do to be a nurse in Canada please?

Thank you

Read some of the stickies and then apply to your provincial College (there are even links if you look hard enough). Only the College can approve your entry into practice or decide if you need upgrading.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

As mentioned check out the province requirements as it can vary a little. Also a lot will depend on your transcripts and having hours both clinical and theory in Mental health, Paeds, Obstetrics and general adult. If you are short on some of these hours you may be required to do some form of assessment or course.

Thank you....I shall look into the links. I am in Alberta.

erm maybe because I have lived in Canada for about 30 days and have moved house twice in that time, plus Christmas etc...I have not nursed in 3 years also so I know nothing about nursing anywhere either! Hence why i asked the question on here where people know!

Specializes in med/surg.

Still worth looking into the nursing though because they will need nurses in the future for sure!

That way, when things get going again you'll be ready & waiting!
