Repeating courses?

Published

Does "repeated courses and withdrawal" (pre-nursing) affects the application for nursing program?

I mean elective courses, not required courses such as chem, ana I & II...etc.

It depends on the school. For some it doesn't matter at all. For others it matters either in general or depending on the reasons for the repeat(s) or withdrawal(s).

On mine it simply has a Rep next to the class when I took it the first time and a line through the grade so you really cant tell what i had. I had to do damage control on my transcript and they said once you retake it, the most recent grade is all that counts. Every school is different though.

I have retaken a few classes outside of nursing school and it was the most recent grade that counted as well.

It depends, school to school.

It also depends on when the repeats were (recent or long ago) and in what subjects.

Our school was so competitive that they didn't bother with anybody who had repeated any prereq's... they simply didn't need to in order to find a suitable number of excellent candidates.

I had to withdraw from A&P1 a month into the semester. Family problems- we found out my dad had cancer and he passed away a month and a half after the semester started. Needless to say there was just NO WAY I could handle that class at that time.

Neither school I applied to had a problem with a "W" on my transcript. I was never asked- though if I was the response above would have been my reply.

I think if there'd been more than one of them, then school would have said something.

It depends on the school. I know in Indiana, Ivy Tech lets you retake the class and takes the highest grade. However, at the University of Indianapolis and Marian University, the classes have to be passed the first time with a C. Also, at the University of Indianapolis, if you withdraw from a class with a grade lower than a C, you are not allowed to retake the class and you are considered as failing that course.

I had a terrible first two semesters when I went back to school. I got sick, mom got very sick, I hadn't been in formal educations for a loooong time and never in America. Essentially, I messed up and had to withdraw from a couple of classes the 1st semester. I got crappy grades the second.

Now, I have managed to raise my GPA to a 3.89 (yep I repeated a couple of classes that I did crappy on). So if a school wants to hold this against me that is their choice. For me it shows great tenacity and I am proud that I got through all of those problems and learned to manage them.

I don't know if this will give me issues when I go to do my post grad degree. It probably will.

I suppose you you have repeat after repeat or withdrew after withdraw it would not look good. These people have a clue and they know people get rough semesters or rough years. So, if they see after the bad, that you improved and knocked it out of the park, I think it would be a positive.

Perhaps I am a bit Pollyanna about this.

I hope not. I'm screwed if they do
