Hi, I am trying to get a job at the local hospital and I'm basically applying for everything that isn't medsurg (not my fav, respect to those who do it). I'm getting a lot of automated rejections. Should I reapply for those listings, or try something else? I get the feeling they aren't looking for new grads.

But you want to get into NICU. What common problems do newborns have? Heart, lung, respiratory, gastrointestinal. You will need to explore what the mature organs do and what the neonate is headed for..

I don't know where you are from, but I find that it can be difficult to get into specialty nursing without a strong background in med-surg. I always suggest that new grads get a good 2-3 years experience in med-surg because that is where you hone those assessment and critical thinking skills. You come across everything, and gain lots of varied experience making you a more valued asset to any where you want to go from there. It might not be your favorite, but it will get you where you want to go with the best experience. Best of luck.

It is extraordinarily difficult for new graduates to get into NICU. I would try to do med-surg for a year and then apply. I know that's not what you want but it may be what it takes. You are so right; NICUs are NOT looking for new grads.

I just wanted to wish you luck! Apply for those med-surg positions, the ones in the hospital that has a NICU you want to work in. Build yourself up there, make connections and attempt to transfer once you gain RN experience.

Med Surg is the best place to get a strong background in the basics. It's a foundation on which you can build for any specialty down the road. As a new grad, you'll need a strong foundation.
Just a question -- how do you know you don't like Med Surg? Because your clinical experience there wasn't the best? Actually working in it will be very different, and it will help you to identify which patient populations you enjoy the most, and the least.
