Regarding life outside nursing school

Nursing Students General Students

Published

here goes.... I am concerned about some students that are in the class below me. One of them was originally in my nursing class, and did not make it past the first semester. She's in the class below me now, and there is a certain clique that all hangs out. I like them, they're all nice. But, I am really really really concerned about their outside class habits. The one time I've been downtown this semester, I saw this girl out plastered drunk again. Saw a girl in their lil clique at Sam's club buying 6 bottles of wine today (is she serving communion at her house?). My boyfriend, who is in their class, overhead them talking about going out drinking Friday night after clinicals.

I do not know how they perform in clinicals. I can only hope and pray they're putting off their drinking habits until after clinicals are over. Do you think I should say something to one of their instructors (ex: I am concerned that some of your students may have drinking problems- no specific names). Advice please-Andrea

Don't flame me too much for this, but I did notice in college that many of the nursing students acted a little prissy, staying in their dorm rooms studying on weekends when everyone else was out having fun.

Hmm, I stay in and study because if I don't I will not pass. And... because my alcoholic father was all the proof I needed of how "fun" drinking is. Had no idea the rest of you thought I was prissy.. :chuckle

But anyway, back to topic... if they show up to clinical drunk, let someone know. If they're throwing 'em back at the bar in their clinical uniform with school patch visible to everyone, let someone know. If they're staggering to their car and ready to climb in, let someone know. Otherwise, it's MYOB.

I have no kids, husband, pets, and only like 3 plants to take care of. I can only stay in hermit mode for so long, and i choose to go to the bar most saturday nights with my friends. I find it rather therapeutic to actually be able to forget about the stress of nursing school 1 night a week. And not all "drinkers" are alcoholics or always falling on their face.

Andrea, I know where you're coming from. It's especially scary when you know people who have had their lives destroyed from alcoholism. Even worse when it's touched you personally. That said, I had a good stiff drink this past weekend and it's the most therapeutic thing I've done for myself in weeks. I didn't fall off any barstool and I think I'll still be admitted to the practice of nursing.

As others have said, sounds like those girls are doing their college student thing. They might get into trouble, they might not. It's their problem. Fly with the eagles and let the turkeys take care of themselves.:)
