Ready to Apply CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2012

U.S.A. Connecticut

ooops... The other one had 2011 instead of 2012... let's try this again:

Just thought I would start a new thread for the current application cycle. Questions... stats... rumors... etc!

My question is... for those applying this cycle, how did you do on the TEAS V? Since this is the first year they are using this test, it would be nice to see how everyone is doing.

(Please don't post TEAS 3 or TEAS 4 results, as the scores are NOT comparable with the TEAS V.)

Yeah it's crazy!!! it's the Nursing 101 Package...when you say 101 bundle, what do mean exactly? You got all of those books for about $450?
Yes. All those books were $450 it also included our nursing diagnosis book if purchased as a bundle there were a couple more too virtual excursion books nobody uses. Our Potter Perry book was $99 on Amazon if purchased alone. They arrived together in a box. In addition we had a lab bag $60, dosage calc 60+50?, I regret buying the lab bag, GWCC students you don't need it practice lab is free and the penlight is junk, we had to buy the 321 calc book and online access, everything online is the same as the book, my recommendation is to skip the online and save half the cost for that one. I do recommend the bundle its all new books for a good deal. For 102 I borrowed the maternity book, you only need it one semester, and I bought peds used for half the cost. So for GWCC 101 I spent $600 but should have spent $500. The one recommended book I use a lot is the drug reference one. don't use Tabers you can Google it for free. Stethoscope, pen light we needed the first week. bandage scissors not until clinicals start. So buy the bundle/package Stethoscope, penlight, math book if separate, drug book, wait on everything else, talk to a student at your school to get the scoop!

Thanks awesome information...I wonder why I was told just one of those books alone would cost so much...total book cost I was told would be $800 or so for 101...I'm sure I will get a lot more info regarding book prices and bundle packages at the orientation...thanks again!!!

Pharm is used 3 semesters, med/surg all 4, fundamentals mostly 101 but also throughout for reference, psych all 4, peds I think is more than one semester. It's not a new stack if books each semester. I started buying those recommended books before I talked to other students ahead if me - expensive mistake. If you join the SNA and attend meetings its a great way to chat with upper classman and pick their brain, what's left of it.

I spoke to the nursing advisor at CCC also. He said we do not need to fill out a transfer of credit form or anything. He said that right now, the registrar is only concerned about figuring out spots as people hand in their letter of intent to attend so that they can address the waiting list. They also aren't going any further in assessing transcripts that figuring out who has what co-reqs for the fall semester. He said they'll be doing it by semester as we go through the program not all at once. When they assessed our transcripts for admission to the program, they only looked at the admission requirements and entered those in, not all the applicable classes (including co-reqs) off the transcript. I'm not sure if other colleges are doing it differently.

I'm glad you asked about the flu shot, that makes total sense. Also, just so everyone knows (it wasn't written on our acceptance letters) Health Forms and the statement that goes with them do not go to registrar, they go to the secretary of the nursing department.

Oh and Saramisu, I was trying to register online for English 102 to get my last co-req out of the way over the summer, but it wouldn't let me. So I spoke with an advisor at CCC today and he told me that was because none of our transcripts would be entered "into the system" until we have our letters in. I thought that was really strange because I was under the impression that unless they had our transcripts entered in the system we wouldn't have even been eligible to get into the program... but apparently not. The admissions people gave me incorrect information twice, so I definitely recommend meeting w/ an advisor face to face or maybe try emailing one - I've never had any luck calling.

Thanks studentnurseCT...me being the type of person I am, I would I was thinking of buying those recommended books...I will look into that SNA, thanks!

hi imzjackson

i also have been accepted at norwalk for spring 2013. it is a great program! My dad and my best friend graduated with their nursing degrees from there. i do know the instructors expect a lot from the students and for clinical exams the students are given three chances to perform the skill they are asked. Hope this helps!

did you get an email about not getting the immunization done right now.

thanks

bedigmo,

Thank you for responding! I guess my main concern with the program was the style of teaching. I wanted to know if they give out notes to follow and add to or if we have to take our own notes.

Yes I did get the email.

thank you!!!

Gateway acceptances..Just started a new thread for us to communicate specifically for our program under "anyone accepted to GWCC for fall 2012 or spring 2013?" Jump on and let us know who you are so we can keep in touch. Thanks!

Oops! I looked over the candidate reply form again cause I made a copy of it, wrote 23rd by accident.. It's the 25th sorry! So wednesday we sign up for nursing 101. Which means Tuesday night at midnight to make sure you get the time you want! :-)

@CNAnursingstudent: yea, I was gonna say it's the 25th! I am going to sign up for the 8.30am class...don't really care which one, but I'd prefer the 8.30am. Did your major change already? Did anyones major change at NVCC? Noreen isn't there until Tuesday, I doubt we can sign up until she changes our major. Mine didn't change yet either. Let me know please :)
