3rd Day of Orientation and I hate it

Published

Is it normal to feel this way? I'm a new nurse and on my 3rd day of orientation. The nurse that I was shadowing let me just say was very helpful at wanting me to learn as much as I can but I felt a little intimidated by her. Remind you this is my 3rd day; She asked me to write a note on a resident who I don't even know. Get report from the 7-3 nurse, do narcotic count w/7-3 nurse & pass out the 3-11 medications. As I was writing the note she laughed at me and I said to her "What is it?". She replied, "nothing". Again, I was doing narcotic count with the oncoming nurse she laughed at "something" I said. Has this happen to you? Any Suggestion?? Thanks

Sometimes it is. I work at a LTC facility and I float between our 4 wings. My first wing LOVE it. The nurse was great at making sure I knew what was up and when I messed up the narc count she was wonderful. On another unit the nurse is ridiculous. She was rude. Laughed if I didn't know how to do things right. I didn't do a G tube med admin and flush quick enough so she took over. I wanted to pull my hair out with her she was just so rude. Just wait until you have the role by yourself. Everyone has diff methods no matter what field you are in and some nurses are just rude to new nurses. Best you can do is ignore her until you have it all to yourself. All the things you mentioned doing is totally normal on a shift. It seems like a lot. Sometimes it is, it requires working through your break but you have to find a system that works for you. Hope this helps!!

Thanks chavezm1109 for your input and advice.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Some nurses forget what it's like to be brand new or maybe she remembers it clearly and did some of those "silly" things herself. My advice is to focus on learning what is expected of you amd how to work efficiently. Look at other nurse's notes as a guide to formulating your own. Learn as much as you can from your preceptor while you can (sometimes we learn what not to do as well!) and ignore any snarkiness. You are not there to make friends. I'm sure you are doing fine. She would surely tell you if you weren't.

Being new in LTC is HARD. But you will get through it. Your orientation sounds like mine when I used to work in LTC. I agree with another poster, focus on learning the job and your role and don't stress about the other things. Look at what others nurses write and use that as a guide. Never chart on a resident you don't know anything about, this is a liability issue. If there was ever a chart audit or anything, you would be held accountable. Hang in there, it'll get better with time! I promise.

Why don't you just ask her? Say something like " did i say something to amuse you"?

I precepted many nurses and was quite aware of their feelings. I had to laugh once though, the orientee was telling me the patient was edomatoes. I simply couldn't figure out what she was saying. I laughed (with delight) when I figure out it was "edematous'

I think I hurt her feelings. Get this out in the open so you can concentrate on your orientation.

Good luck, keep us posted.
