no random drug testing

Nurses Career Support

Published

i'm a 20 something year old new nurse. I haven't smoked weed in a year and a half just for this career. I think it's ridiculous to not be able to smoke outside of work. I'm wondering if there is any place I could work where they won't randomly drug test. It's to the point that I'm considering picking a different profession because the quality of my life is more important to me than running around in a maze set up by corporate america trying to make a little bit of money. I heard even if i move to a state where it is decriminalized or legal I still may lose my license if I come up dirty on a random drug test. pre-employment tests are no problem.

Wow. I find this thread INCREDIBLY sad.

Agreed. Is pot REALLY that much more important than your CAREER? Wow.

Dude...I'll be honest with you.

If drugs are so important that you try to find a job so you can keep up your habit (no matter how long it's been since you have engaged)...you have a drug problem.

The protection of the public is far more important than your desire to engage in a mind-altering substance.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Tele, Dialysis, Hospice.

Ditto what everyone else said about smoking pot being more important than your career.

Also, and I know that when you're 20-something you tend to feel invincible, but have you considered what smoking pot does to your health? Unfiltered cigarettes of any kind, whether legal or wacky tobacky are filled with toxic carcinogens, and you aren't doing your brain cells any favors either.

Maybe you could try being a hospice nurse for a while and watch as many people die of lung cancer as I have. It is a horrible, painful, smothering death that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but the mom in me (and I am old enough to be your mom) hopes that you find a way to give up the weed for good.

So you'd give up your CAREER that you went to school for jut so you can smoke weed? Because not smoking weed has decreased your quality of life?

Wow. I find this thread INCREDIBLY sad.

Duly noted.

Just because we don't have Big Brother watching our every move doesn't 't mean we all come to work high. We are still responsible professionals.

Being responsible is obeying the law wether or not you agree with them. You skirt the law/rules because you disagree with them. Makes me wonder what you may ignore at work because you don't agree with the policy or rule. Because apparently it's ok to do so as long as no one gets hurt.

Specializes in Gerontology.

I was responding to the comment a poster made that he would not want to be a patient in Canada.

For the record, I obey all laws and rules. I do not ignore anything.

Canada does not have random drug testing. That does not mean we all walk around high.

I cannot believe that anyone would really find something so minuscule as weed more important to their lives than their career that brings food to their table and a roof over their head. I believe you need to check, then recheck your priorities.

Sure. You can work for a private employer, like a doctor.

Also...one of my teachers said that MJ is like any controlled substance...if you have a script for it, you should be okay. I suppose that this would vary by the individual policy from the facility, though. Try talking to someone in HR.

There are certain scripts that you can't test positive for while working, at least here. We can use them when not working but they impair cognitive function too much to use on the job.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

A medical marijuana script/card is not bulletproof protection against disciplinary action, not even here in CA where we just celebrated the unofficial state holiday known as 4-20 Day ;)

Seriously, most facilities will not look favorably on a positive THC test, and even if you have a script in hand they can legally fire/discipline you.
