no random drug testing

Published

i'm a 20 something year old new nurse. I haven't smoked weed in a year and a half just for this career. I think it's ridiculous to not be able to smoke outside of work. I'm wondering if there is any place I could work where they won't randomly drug test. It's to the point that I'm considering picking a different profession because the quality of my life is more important to me than running around in a maze set up by corporate america trying to make a little bit of money. I heard even if i move to a state where it is decriminalized or legal I still may lose my license if I come up dirty on a random drug test. pre-employment tests are no problem.

there should be no random testing at all. for cause only, and with two managers agreeing...

I have known plenty of hard working, quick on their feet and respectful nurses who smoke marijuana, if finding a job where your able to smoke is your deal then that is completely fine. I think it's despicable that nurses should be judged for what they do on their days off, yet I worked at a bar during nursing school that was frequented by MDs who would over drink all the time! Who cares tho?! They weren't working and being drunk. I wouldn't want all these judgemental nurses taking care of me and would rather one who smokes weed on her day off. For the record, I do not smoke weed but do not pass judgement on those.

Is it true that by law an employer in Maine has to give you 30 day notice for a random drug test?

I hope I never get sick in Maine or Canada. I can't imagine a health care employer not drug testing. I would hope that they would want clear minded/competent nurses on staff.

Sure, because people in Maine and Canada don't drink alcohol either, right?

Alcohol is much much worse for nurses than marijuana. FACT.

I sure am glad I didn't grow up under a rock.

First of all, marijuana is much safer than alcohol.. Well, that's really all you need to know. I'm willing to bet at least 75% with negative comments go out or have a few drinks at home on a regular basis. Yes marijuana is still illegal. Should it be, no. If anything alcohol should be illegalized before marijuana. Marijuana was made illegal in the early 20th century for reasons unrelated to it being a danger. Are you still risking your job, yes. Are you wrong for wanting to, no. Nuff said.

You all need to do your research instead of going off what you've been told and passing judgement. That's no way to live life and it's not conducive to nursing.
