Rady Children's RN Residency Summer 2011

Published

Hello fellow new grads and RNs,

I couldn't find a current thread for the RN residency program at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, so I decided to start one. :)

I applied first thing on 3/11/11 for all open positions- but I really hope to work in Hem/Onc (

I've heard they look for experience and like to hire internally (last new grad class was ~80% internal hires) from a friend of mine who works there.

Does anyone know any other info (number of positions, how many apps, etc)?

Has anyone heard anything yet? If you have heard from them, can you describe the type of candidate you are (degree, experience, app date/time, etc.)?

Thanks guys! Best wishes to all in this extremely tough job market!

Specializes in Telemetry.

I applied but have not heard anything yet. I have a prior degree in biology and a BSN and recently passed NCLEX. What are your status?

nothing yet. i have a BSN. weren't we only supposed to apply for one position?

what's frustrating is that if a lot of new grad programs are looking to hire internally, then why bother posting it publically?

I also have a 2nd degree BSN, graduated last August and passed NCLEX in October. Still haven't heard anything from Rady and no status changes on my application.

Hi All! Love the support that these forums offer to us new grads struggling to find jobs in today's market!

I applied for each open position on 3/11 probably about an hour after they opened. I heard from NICU on Thursday to schedule an interview for this upcoming Monday. Shortly after, I received a phone call from Hem/Onc to set up an interview for Tuesday. I'm not exactly sure what their interview process is, or how many applicants they're interviewing. I did however find out from a friend who works there that the req number from the application says how many positions they have available for each unit (it's the number after the . ). For example, Hem/Onc's req number is 38381.3...so they have 3 positions. I'm not sure if this includes internal positions as well. As you know, they opened the internal applications a month before external and from what I've heard have already offered positions to those candidates. So there's still hope for us external candidates!

A little background on me..I grew up here in San Diego and graduated with my BSN in August from out of state. I have a personal history with Children's being that my sister was an inpatient on Hem/Onc for quite some time. I was actively involved with organizations associated with childhood cancer through Rady's for a long time, but had to back away for a little bit since I was in school. As for NICU, I feel that receiving the interview was luck. My only association with them is a long time friend of mine's mom is a manager on that unit.

I've interviewed for other big hospitals in San Diego..the latest being Scripps, but Children's interview process definitely seems different. So even if you haven't heard from them yet, don't count yourselves out!

I didn't know we were only supposed to apply to one position... I didn't see any info posted about that, but maybe I missed it. Where did you see it?

It is frustrating that internal hired make our chances even worse. I guess they want to keep their options open if there aren't enough internal applicants or they don't make it through the process? Who knows, but I share your frustration. If that is the plan, they should limit the application posting to fewer days so there are less applicants to deal with, IMHO.

still trucking along...

Thanks for the info ReblRN!

Based on what you said, I went through and calculated that there are approximately 25 new grad positions total (but unsure how many are internal).

Congratulations on your interviews! Please let us know how they go~ such wonderful news! :yeah:

I hope the rest of us hear soon as well, either way, because I hate the waiting game :/ Scripps was a killer waiting game, only to find out I didn't get the job! I hope it's a different story for us all with Rady's :)

i only applied to med/surg, because they didn't have surgery/OR (which is what i want to specialize in).

reblRN, Congrats on the interview! Sounds like you might have gotten the interview because of your connection? I'm sure you are well qualified, but knowing the unit manager does not hurt! Hope they give the rest of us a shot as well.

So did you have your interview? How did it go?? :)

Thanks for starting this thread! I too applied for all of the positions. It's hard to tell what they're looking for besides getting hired by who you know, which sucks because it makes all of the effort you put into nursing school go down the drain. :( I have a BSN, med-surg RN experience, CPR/ACLS, magna cum laude, and I am bilingual--but I too got denied from Scripps. I also hope it's not mostly internal applicants because they shouldn't have even posted it on the web in the first place if that's the case. I would love to work in the NICU or Hem/Onc. I had my practicum in the NICU and really enjoyed it. I also wrote an undergraduate thesis on bottle feeding preterm babies. If I don't get called for interview I really dunno what else I could possibly do! I feel like I have everything they should be looking for! Well, besides knowing someone that works there.

Anyway, congrats to those who have gotten interviews! And everyone else, keep your head up! =)

Specializes in Pediatric ED.

I only applied for the ER and surgical unit. My status on the ER position says I was not selected and the one for the surgical unit says something about being forwarded. I interviewed for the surgical unit and hopefully will hear something in the future...

As far as numbers, I only know what they told me about the surgical unit. There are 8 openings and they told me that four of them are already going to internal hires. She also said there were 550 apps and they were only interviewing BSN's.

I know, Scripps was a bummer! I interviewed for the trauma unit and didn't get it, despite a BSN, ACLS/PALS and prior medical experience. Peds is my passion, so I guess if I get the one at Rady it was meant to be!

Good luck, everyone. On a conversation on FB about job prospects, one of my friends sent this link of Dory from Finding Nemo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmyUkm2qlhA Just keep swimming, and hopefully things will get better for us new grads soon!
