Rady Children's RN Residency Summer 2011

Published

Hello fellow new grads and RNs,

I couldn't find a current thread for the RN residency program at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, so I decided to start one. :)

I applied first thing on 3/11/11 for all open positions- but I really hope to work in Hem/Onc (

I've heard they look for experience and like to hire internally (last new grad class was ~80% internal hires) from a friend of mine who works there.

Does anyone know any other info (number of positions, how many apps, etc)?

Has anyone heard anything yet? If you have heard from them, can you describe the type of candidate you are (degree, experience, app date/time, etc.)?

Thanks guys! Best wishes to all in this extremely tough job market!

I only applied for the ER and surgical unit. My status on the ER position says I was not selected and the one for the surgical unit says something about being forwarded. I interviewed for the surgical unit and hopefully will hear something in the future...

As far as numbers, I only know what they told me about the surgical unit. There are 8 openings and they told me that four of them are already going to internal hires. She also said there were 550 apps and they were only interviewing BSN's.

I know, Scripps was a bummer! I interviewed for the trauma unit and didn't get it, despite a BSN, ACLS/PALS and prior medical experience. Peds is my passion, so I guess if I get the one at Rady it was meant to be!

Good luck, everyone. On a conversation on FB about job prospects, one of my friends sent this link of Dory from Finding Nemo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmyUkm2qlhA Just keep swimming, and hopefully things will get better for us new grads soon!

ugh so lucky you got an interview!!!! how was it?? i take comfort in the fact that mine still say that theyre under review lol. pathetic! my passion is neonatal/peds too. i would love to work at Radys. and I have a BSN! pick me pick me! lol

I hope your interview went well! i hope you get it!!!!!!

That youtube video made me very happy :) I am keeping this bookmarked to keep me going!

Did any of you get hired as external applicants? I interviewed last week and fell in love. I thought my interview went great (especially for my first nursing interview and not knowing what to expect!) and just today found out I didn't get the job. So disappointing!! I'm trying to cheer myself up and tell myself it was a learning experience.... still bummed though, seemed like a great fit for me.

They told me there were 6 positions for new grads in my unit, at the time I assumed there were 6 external applicant slots. Now I'm wondering if there were only maybe 1 or 2. When I spoke with the nurse recruiter a while back, she told me there were about 24 new grad slots, and she anticipated only about 12 would be open to external candidates, so I guess only 1 or 2 external slots would make more sense.

@PediLove2147- I'm glad it helped! Every now and then someone from my class will post that to their status to keep us all motivated.

@studystudy- Keep your head up and see my above link! I didn't get the job that was my first interview either. It definitely gets easier and now you know more of what to expect. Also, I don't think any final decisions will be made for quite a while. The manager I interviewed with indicated it would be about a month, with at least one more interview in between.

@pinkcupcakeRN- I think it went pretty well and I've been invited to do a peer interview with a couple of the nurses on the floor, which is encouraging! Thanks for the good wishes!

I know it's hard to be happy for others when you're out of the running, but it's definitely appreciated! I love all these new grad threads since we're all in the same position and so highly qualified. Hopefully things will turn around soon. Just keep swimming!!

I am happy for you! :yeah: No ill will to anybody getting called for more interviews and getting job offers! Good luck on your next interview!

My interview was a peer interview with some staff nurses. I just thought it went really well, so I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong or could have done better. It's okay.... something will work out! :nurse:

I applied to NICU and I have not heard anything yet, my status still says I am under review. Does anyone know if all the NICu positions are filled up?

Hi all! this thread is so quiet compared to the Scripps and Sharp one lol. maybe b/c it's a children's hospital?

anyhow! Did anyones app status change? The status for one of the positions I applied to changed to "your application has been reviewed and is currently being considered to determine if you are one of the most qualified applicants" VS what the other two still say "thank you for your interest in Rady Children's. Your application has been received and is currently under review". I guess they both sound like the same thing LOL

@pinkcupcakeRN: I just checked and mine have not changed. As far as I know, I'm still in the running for the surgical unit. I had a peer interview last Thursday, though I haven't heard anything since. The status for that job still says, "Your application has been reviewed and is currently being considered to determine if you are one of the most qualified applicants."

The one for the ED app says, "Thank you for your interest in Rady Children's. At this time, we are unable to consider you for this position." The latter is a definite 'no' but I think the first one is still good.

Maybe since the first one changed for you, it might be a sign you'll be hearing something for an interview? What did it say before that? I don't want to give false hope as I'm only speculating!

DD1 went for 2nd interview April 11th, no word yet. Anyone got any offers?

I had my second interview on the 17th and haven't heard anything since. My application status hasn't changed either so I still have a wee bit of hope left.

Purple_KicksRN: How's job hunting? DD1 got waitlisted at UCLA. Applied and interviewed at Rady's no offers yet. She got an offer at CHOC. Have not heard from HR, I guess they are still not done with the background checking.

USC will open in May so as Stanford I think. Stanford requires experience.

UCI&UCSFMom: I haven't heard anything from Rady yet. I called last Friday and the manager said we'd hear from HR either way by the end of this week, hopefully. I did however get an offer at Sharp Grossmont today! I'm looking in San Diego so stuff in the LA area are too far for me. Thanks for the heads up though! That's awesome about the offer at CHOC, I heard it's a great place. One of my preceptors in Sacramento said it was even better than Rady.
